This article applies to the Ford Mustang V6 and GT (2005-2014).

All vehicles come with headlights and tail lights. Most vehicles also come with "fog lights." These components are crucial to the safety of you, your passengers, oncoming traffic and everyone around you. Every now and then, a bulb may "burn out" and need replacing, which will only cost $10 a pair. Or, maybe someone backed into you accidentally and you need to replace a damaged head lamp. Lastly, the aftermarket auto industry turns out replacement parts for nearly every make and model on the market today. Often, owners like to upgrade their existing headlights and fog lights to upgraded units. Aside from the possibility of some easy wiring, most applications are plug and play.

Materials Needed

  • Flat tip screwdriver
  • Ratchet set with various sockets
  • Torx bit drivers

Step 1 – Remove front bumper

In order to access the bolts holding the headlights and fog lights in, the bumper will need to come off completely.

  • Remove six bolts from the radiator shroud.
  • Remove two upper bumper bolts.
  • Remove fender liner bolts.
  • Remove two side bumper bolts on each side.
  • Pull the bumper toward you in an angle from side to side to remove.

Pro Tip

At this time, the wiring harnesses from the headlights and fog lights can be disconnected. You can usually twist and turn them counterclockwise. If there are tabs, you can depress them using the flat tip screwdriver.

Step 2 – Remove headlights and fog lights

Depending on what you're replacing, now that everything is accessible, you can swap headlights and/or fog lights. You could also replace bulbs if needed, as well.

  • If replacing fog lights, remove four Torx screws.
  • If replacing headlights, remove push pins on both units.
  • Remove three bolts from headlight unit.

Pro Tip

If you were only replacing bulbs, it is not necessary to remove the bumper. You would reach behind the head lamp, twist the bulb holder counterclockwise and pull to replace faulty bulb. There are also gaskets that get replaced around the bulb. Your new bulbs should be supplied with them.

Step 3 – Reinstall lights and bumper

Now that the bulbs have been replaced or headlights and/or fog lights are ready to be swapped in, it's time to button it all up.

  • Reinstall headlights in recesses and secure push pins as well as bolts.
  • Reinstall fog lights into integrated grill and secure with Torx bolts.
  • Reconnect the harnesses.
  • Reattach bumper, then secure with upper bumper bolts and side bolts.
  • Reattach fender liners.
  • Reinstall the six radiator shroud bolts.
