Ford Mustang V6 and Mustang GT 2005-2014: How to Replace OEM Fog Lights with Aftermarket Bulbs

Learn how to upgrade the existing halogen fog lights to something brighter.

This article applies to the Ford Mustang V6 and GT (2005-2014).

Most vehicles are equipped with a standard set of headlights and turn signals. Many higher tier cars come with the option of fog lights. These are usually located either on the center grille or the lower center of the bumper. They usually have built in "projectors" that allow the light to emit a more sharper beam for harsher driving conditions, such as heavy fog. There are now aftermarket solutions that allow the owner to upgrade the fog lights to better, more brighter lights. Some even come with a darker, more tinted option for looks. If you are aiming to brighten your lights, a relay kit is recommended to be installed at the same time.

Note that the DIY Cost is only for aftermarket fog lights. A relay harness will cost $75 and a Mustang GT's headlight switch will be $30.

Materials Needed

  • Flat tip screwdriver
  • Ratchet set with various sockets
  • X-Acto knife
  • Electrical tape
  • Heat shrink
  • Solder/solder gun
  • Torx bit driver

Step 1 – Remove front grille

On these mustangs, the fog lights are integrated into the grille. For easier access, it can help to remove the grille.

  • Disconnect the fog light harnesses behind the grille.
  • Remove the six screws on top of radiator shroud.
  • Release the eight tabs to free the grille.
  • Finally, remove the grille.

Pro Tip

It may be necessary to use the flat tip screwdriver to depress the tab to release the connector clips on the harness.

Step 2 – Swap in new fog lights

Now that the grille is out and everything is accessible, new units can be swapped in.

  • Use the Torx bit driver to remove the bolts holding in the existing fog lights.
  • Swap in the new fog lights.
  • Reinstall the grille, partially.

Pro Tip

If you're not going to be connecting a relay harness at this point, you can install the grille fully and secure the eight tabs as well as six radiator shroud screws.

Step 3 – Install relay harness

Relay harnesses allow your lighting components to get full power from the alternator and headlight switch rather than relying on the loom.

  • Build your harness if you have bought individual components.
  • Mount your harness if you bought a complete kit.
  • Splice the 14 gauge wire into the relay of the existing fog light harness.
  • Solder the connection and secure with heat shrink.
  • Connect the in-line fuse holder.
  • Wrap all new connections with electrical tape.
  • If using a GT switch, complete the connection at the orange/light green wire.
  • If using a standard switch, complete the connection at the red/white wire.

Pro Tip

For advanced users, this is a good time to tap into the headlight harness and allow your headlights to benefit from brighter lights, as well.
