This article applies to the Ford Mustang V6 and GT (2005-2014).

Keyless remote entry operates on a simple system. Your remote key fob is a mini radio transmitter. It sends a radio message to a receiver in your car that tells it to lock (or unlock) the doors. This radio signal is coded to prevent someone from using their garage door remote to open your car's door locks. When you replace your remote key fob, you have to "teach" it what your car's unique codes are. You do this by letting the receiver in your car tell the new key fob what these codes are. All you have to do is arrange for the two of them to meet each other.

Materials Needed

  • Keyless remote fob
  • Mustang's key (to insert into ignition)

Make sure that your car is not within 20' of another Ford product when you program the fob, as it my confuse the signal.

Step 1 – Insert key into ignition

Insert your key into the ignition. The starting position is #1. You will have to turn it forward to "Run" (position #3).

  • Position #1: Off
  • Position #2: Accessory
  • Position #3: Run (This is the resting position for the key when the car is running.)
  • Position #4: Start

Step 2 – Turn the key

Quickly turn the key from position #1 to position #3 eight times within ten seconds. Leave the key in position #3 on the eighth turn. Your doors will automatically lock (or unlock) when you do this.

Step 3 – Press replacement key fob's lock/unlock button

Press the "Lock" or "Unlock" button on your fob immediately. This pairs the fob with the coded signals received by the receiver in the car. If you have a second fob to program, do it within the eight seconds. The receiver signal will reset after that. If it does, simply repeat Step 2.
