A busted gauge cluster is a bummer. If your speedometer goes out, you're driving blind. If the back lights go out, things get really tricky come nighttime.

This article applies to the Ford Mustang V6 and Mustang GT (2005-2014).

Your gauge cluster contains vital information for the vehicle and the driver. Engine temperature shows when the vehicle is up to the operating temp, or possibly overheating. The tachometer shows you the engine's revs, so you know when to shift. The speedometer obviously keeps your speed in check. If that goes out and you drive past the cops at the "wrong" speed, you're hosed.

Whether you're bored of your existing cluster, or it has has stopped working and simply needs to be replaced, this article will show you how to replace it with a flashy looking cluster that is much more pleasant to look at, or simply a stock, working unit.

Materials Needed

  • 9/32" or 7mm socket and driver
  • Ratchet with small extension or deep socket in 9/32" or 7mm
  • Plastic trim removal tool or flat head screwdriver with electrical tape over the end

Step 1 – Remove dash trim

Lower the steering wheel as low as possible so that you have some room to work with. Beginning on the left-hand side of the dash, start prying the dash panel covering the instrument cluster out using a trim removal tool or flat head screwdriver. Move to the right side and repeat the process until it is loose. Grab the trim panel from each side and pull straight back. Set the trim panel aside.

Step 2 – Remove the gauge cluster

The cluster is held in place by four screws; one in each corner. Use the 9/32" or 7mm socket and driver to remove the top two screws, and the ratchet with deep socket or extension to remove the bottom two screws. Pull the gauge cluster forward to access the wiring connector on the back. To release the connector, press in on the locking tab with one hand while flipping the lever with the other hand.

Step 3 – Install new gauge cluster

Plug the wiring connector into the back of the new gauge cluster and push the lever down. Slide the cluster in the dash. Reinstall the four screws and tighten. Slide the cluster trim back into place and firmly tap each side with your fist until it the connectors click back in place. Move your steering wheel back into the desired position.
