This article applies to the Ford Mustang V6 and Mustang GT (2005-2014).

If your vinyl stripes have water spots or other road contaminants that won't come off, don't panic. There's a simple and easy way to clean them. We'll explain how, as well as go over the materials you'll need to complete the job. Once your new or old vinyl stripes are spotless, you can drive your Ford Mustang with pride. Don't be surprised if you turn a few heads while out on the road.

Materials Needed

  • All-purpose cleaner or degreaser
  • Soft rags or cleaning mitt
  • Polish
  • Wax (optional)

Step 1 – Clean the vinyl stripes

Use vinyl cleaner to gently remove any surface spots or stains. The keyword here is gentle. You don't want to expose the stripes to too much product or too much force while cleaning them. Additionally, it's highly recommended that you clay the vinyl stripes first. Doing so will eliminate any underlining dirt and grime, some of which might not be visible to the human eye.

  • Choose an all-purpose cleaner or degreaser for best results.
  • Keep in mind that if you do not notice any improvement after one or two passes with the cleaner and a wet rag, you might need to switch to a stronger acidic cleaner, particularly if stubborn water spots or other stains persist.
  • Wipe away any excess solution, so your vinyl stripes do not become too soaked.

Pro Tip

You could also see an improvement using car soap and water. Depending on your budget, you might want to start with a mixture of three parts water and one part liquid car wash. If you don't see the results you would like, switch to a high-performance cleaner or degreaser instead.

Step 2 – Apply a car polish

Apply a high-performance car polish to your vinyl decals. Optimum Polish II is the go-to brand for vinyl racing stripes. Formulated to remove tough grime yet gentle enough to protect against fading, Optimum car care products will ensure your vinyl stripes appear shinier and more dynamic than before.

  • Apply the polish in a shaded area.
  • Work the entire vinyl stripe in a circular motion until the polish is evenly distributed; you'll need a soft cloth for this job.
  • Remove any excess polish.

Pro Tip

It's recommended that you perform all of the tasks associated with this project as part of your normal detailing routine.

Step 3 – Finish with a car wax

For a showstopping finish, add a layer or two of any high-performance car wax. Apply as normal, taking care to protect surrounding areas, if you will not be detailing your entire vehicle.

  • Starting once again from a shaded area, apply a layer of car wax to your vinyl stripes.
  • The vinyl stripes must be dry.
  • It's only necessary to apply a very small layer; don't overdo it.
  • Buff the wax into the vinyl stripe, and remove any excess wax.
  • We recommend using one of Meguiar's many highly rated car wax products on the market today.
