This article applies to the Ford Mustang V6 (2005-2014).

You've tried lowering your steering wheel (even turning it side to side), but your key still won't release. The problem is pretty common and is very easy to fix. You won't need to make a trip down to a local Ford dealership or put in a call to the owner of your neighborhood garage. Simply follow the straightforward troubleshooting tips and trusted advice provided below and you'll be driving in no time. Not only do we explain the possible cause(s) of the problem, but we also offer important consumer information that you'll want to know for dealing with this issue in the future.

Materials Needed

  • Torx screwdriver

Step 1 – Check the shifter

You might need to troubleshoot it.

Your shifter contains a release button that you can push to release your key from the ignition. If your key does not immediately release from your ignition, repeat the following instructions including the second component of the process, which involves shifting forward.

  • Locate the small button on the right side of the shifter bezel.
  • Press down on the small button using the tip of your finger, while simultaneously turning your key in the ignition until your key is released.
  • Repeat as needed or remove your key from your ignition.
  • This time press down on the small button using the tip of your finger, while pressing the shifter forward.
  • Remove your key from your ignition.

Step 2 – Check your shifting patterns

You might not be shifting into gear properly, or your Ford Mustang may be hanging in the "dead" space between your gears.

Whether you own a Ford Mustang with an automatic or manual transmission, you'll want to be mindful when shifting gears. Doing so will ensure you shift all the way into the Park position. If you do not, your key will not release and you will not be able to get it out.

  • After shifting into the Park position, it's recommended that you gently wiggle your shifter from side to side for a brief moment. Doing so will ensure the shifter is properly engaged. You won't need to exert much force here.
  • Once you know you've correctly shifted into the Park position, you can remove your key as usual.

Step 3 – Check the steering wheel

If your key no longer turns in the ignition, don't worry! The issue could be related to your steering wheel, and it is an easy fix.

  • Maneuver the steering column, so it drops down slightly and reveals the steering linkage.
  • You will see an interlock device held in place by two Torx screws.
  • Remove the interlock device, turn your key to the lock position, and then reinstall it.
