This article applies to the Ford Mustang GT (1996-2004).

For Ford Mustang GT owners, K&N performance air filters will be your best choice in air filter replacements. These drop-in filters are easy to install. Best of all, you can drive your Ford Mustang for about 10,000 miles before your new air filter will need to be cleaned.

Cleaning your air filter is simple: simply soak it in water for approximately 10 minutes. Once the filter is done soaking, allow it to thoroughly dry before installing it back in your Ford Mustang. Because the filter comes lubricated, you won't need to worry about applying a lubricant during or after the installation process.

Material Needed

  • Replacement air filter

Step 1 – Loosen the metal fastener

  • Pop the hood of your Mustang.
  • Loosen the metal fastener that you see fastened around the air box.
  • If you feel you are having trouble getting to the air box, remove the wiring harness that goes to the mass air flow sensor. You can find it on top of the clean air lid.
  • Next, remove the temperature sensor and then loosen the clamp that fastens the inlet hose to the mass air flow sensor.
  • Finish by removing the inlet hose and band clamp that connects the lid to the air box.

Step 2 – Unbolt the air box

  • Carefully unbolt the air box from the fender, so they are no longer bolted together.
  • Once the air box is free, remove it by hand. The best way to do this is by easing it completely out of its location using a gentle back and forth motion.

Step 3 – Swap out your old filter

  • Switch out your old filter for a new one.
  • To complete this project, you'll need to reverse your steps and replace all of the parts you removed in Steps 1 and 2.

Pro Tip

If you're unsure which filter to use, it's recommended that you consult your owner's manual. If you no longer have your owner's manual, you can also check the Haynes' manual. Be sure to check which filter is needed for your particular Ford Mustang model year. Different model years may require different air filters, so check to make sure you're installing the correct one.
