This article applies to the Ford Mustang GT (2005-2014).

The water pump is a device driven by a belt, so as the engine rotates, the belt turns the water pump, which then pumps water and coolant into the engine. Without the water pump, your Ford Mustang GT's engine will overheat. There are a few signs that would indicate a bad water pump; if you notice a leak from the water pump, then it's probably faulty. You can also diagnose a bad pump by moving its pulley back and fourth. If it wobbles, then the bearings have gone bad and it's time for a replacement. If you hear low grinding noise, it could be an indicator that your water pump's bearing is wearing. Replacing the water pump is a simple procedure; however, it requires you to work in a tight area. Read on if you're up to the task of replacing the water pump in your Ford Mustang GT.

Materials Needed

  • Socket set
  • 1/2 breaker bar
  • Coolant
  • Drain pan
  • New water pump

Step 1 – Drain radiator

Locate the drain plug on the bottom of the radiator, place the drain pan underneath it, and loosen it by turning it counterclockwise. Let the radiator drain completely.

Step 2 – Remove water pump

Use your 1/2 breaker bar to loosen the tensioner. Push towards the driver's side, and then remove the belt. Remove the four 10mm bolts holding the water pump pulley in place. When you remove the four bolts, the pulley will fall off in your hand. Remove the four 13mm bolts holding the water pump in place and remove the pump.

Step 3 – Install new pump

The new water pump should come with a gasket, so install the gasket on it and then install the water pump in its place. Tighten the four 13mm bolts. Install the pulley on top of it and tighten the four 10mm bolts holding it in place. Use your breaker bar to push down towards the driver on the tensioner, then wrap the belt around it the same way as before with the other hand. Fill your radiator back with the coolant, start your car, and then re-check your coolant. Top off if you need to, and don't forget to check the radiator's drain plug for any leaks.
