Intro

Today's Top 5 Tires for Your Ford Mustang post is sponsored by our friends at Tire Agent. However, each tire suggestion was made independently and is not sponsored.

Mustang owners are quick to tune and lower and throw an exhaust on their Ponies. But for my money, there is no better Mustang mod than a fresh set of amazing tires. Because, let's face it, unless you snag a Performance Package GT or one of the special editions like a Mach 1 or Dark Horse, stock Mustang tires are often extremely pedestrian. But the right set of tires will make your Pony feel like you did a whole bunch of pricy modifications. In short, great tires have the potential to make your Mustang not only faster, but also safer. And all without lifting a wrench. Here are five great tire options for the Ford Mustang...

5. Falken Azenis FK460 AS

Yes, we're starting out this list with an all-season tire, but hear me out. When you daily drive a Ford Mustang anywhere snow flies, you need to be prepared. Enter the Falken Azenis FK460 AS, which performs better than many of the cheaper summer tires you'll find from lesser-known brands. But these Falkens can also hang out in frigid weather and cruise through (light) snow. Falken claims they used an "Advanced 4D Nano Technology" to design a rubber compound that blends performance in all seasons with improved wet and dry traction. The tread pattern itself helps channel water out from under the tire while limiting road noise. Falken even offers a limited 50,000-mile tread wear warranty as well as two years of complimentary road hazard protection. (Meaning, assuming you haven't done too many burnouts, they'll replace a damaged tire for free in the first two years of ownership.)

4. Continental ExtremeContact DWS06 PLUS

With some tires, you can have it all. The Continental ExtremeContact DWS06 PLUS is in the rarified ultra-high-performance all-season tire category. This variant -- the PLUS -- iteration improves on an already impressive all-season with better wet and dry handling and braking alongside improved snow and ice handling. Like the Falkens, Continental includes 50,000 miles of limited tread-wear warranty, but ups its roadside protection program to a full three years of tire replacement (make sure to read the fine print, though).

3. Nitto NT555 G2

Stepping up into the summer-only category, we have the Nitto NT555 G2, the second iteration of an iconic performance tire beloved by drag and roll racers. Nitto combines twin center ribs, large tapered blocks, and reinforced shoulder tread blocks to improve straight-line acceleration as well in grip in wet and dry cornering. These are the perfect tires for hot rodders or daily drivers who play hard on the weekend too.

2. Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S

Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tires are nothing short of magic. Michelin combines several different compounds to make a tire that can turn almost like a track tire, achieve maximum grip on dry and wet pavement, and they'll even last 30,000 miles (with square configurations). This isn't a lot compared to normal touring tires, but in the max-performance summer tire realm, that's really good. To be fair, they're not the best for lots of track days (see the next tire for that), but the Pilot Sport 4 S may be the most capable and well-rounded summer performance tire ever made. There's a reason why Ford has installed these on several Shelby and Performance Pack Mustang GTs.

1. Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2

The standard tires on the Shelby GT350R & GT500 Carbon Fiber Track Package cars. They're expensive. The tread only lasts about 6,000 miles. And you really shouldn't drive them in the rain (or anywhere cold). But if you have the budget, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires are quite possibly the best street-legal tires ever made. Ultra sticky when properly warmed, Cup 2s will allow you to accelerate quicker, brake harder and later, and turn with more lateral G-forces than you'd ever thought possible. You have to be careful with and respect these tires. But if you do those things, your reward is a car that feels glued to the road at all times.
