Intro

0 to 60 mph is the most common performance measurement used to compare cars. However, it is also one of the most difficult to use. The reason is that there are so many variables that go into a 0 to 60 mph run. In order to remove as many variables as possible we took all of our times from the same source. We used Car and Driver road tests for all the performance figures. And even that is not as easy as it seems. Beginning in December 2019 they began to deduct the 1-foot rollout time from the published 0 to 60 time. Prior to them using a 1-foot rollout they used a 3-mph rollout. The times we use here include the rollout time. What we did not include were any all-electric Mustangs. With all that being said, here are the quickest Mustangs to 60 mph of all-time.

10. 2011 Ford Mustang GT – 4.6 Seconds

The 5.0 Coyote V8 in the 2011 Mustang GT made 412 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque. After hitting 60 mph it would trip the quarter mile lights in 13.2 seconds at 109 mph. Not too shabby for a standard Mustang GT that is over ten years old. It is amazing that the slowest car on this list hits 60 mph in well under 5 seconds.

9. 2021 Ford Mustang Mach 1 – 4.6 Seconds

The 2021 Mach 1 makes a healthy 480 horsepower. But it is slower to 60 mph than some of the others on this list because it comes only with a 6-speed manual transmission. That doesn’t make it a bad car. In fact, it makes it a great car. But in the 0 to 60 mph sprint it loses out to some others with the quicker shifting automatic.

8. 2015 Ford Mustang GT – 4.5 Seconds

The 2015 Ford Mustang was an all-new generation. The Coyote V8 under the hood now has 435 horsepower. That was enough to shave another tenth off the 0 to 60 mph time compared to the previous generation Mustang GT. This was not just a quick car, but it was fast as well. The 2015 Mustang GT could hit 164 mph on the top end.

7. 2003 Ford SVT Cobra – 4.5 Seconds

It ties the 2015 Mustang GT to 60 mph, but we rank the SVT Cobra higher because it did a dozen years earlier and is a tick quicker to the quarter mile at just 12.9 seconds. The supercharged V8 under the hood was good for 390 horsepower and a matching 390 pound-feet of torque. It is hard to believe this car is now twenty years old. But it can still scoot off the line.

6. 2000 SVT Mustang Cobra R – 4.4 Seconds

This iconic Mustang is both older and quicker than the SVT Cobra from 2003. Only 300 of these amazing machines were built. The naturally aspirated 5.4L V8 had 385 horsepower. It was slightly down on power compared to the 2003 car, but this special Cobra R was also over 100 pounds lighter. This car remains a favorite Mustang among many even today.

5. 2013 Ford Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca – 4.2 Seconds

This is a beast of a Mustang. Car and Driver tested this with the exhaust restrictor plates removed. And it romped to 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds and had dispatched with the quarter mile in just 12.7 seconds. On top of that, as the name would suggest, this model is also more than capable around a racetrack.

4. 2016 Shelby GT350R – 3.9 Seconds

The GT350R was designed for the road course and not the drag strip. But thanks to lightweight carbon fiber wheels and sticky Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires the GT350R can rocket to 60 mph in less than 4 seconds. And you will get to bask in the wonderful tone of that flat-plane crank engine the entire way.

3. 2018 Ford Mustang GT – 3.8 Seconds

To get this time you need a very specific 2018 Ford Mustang GT. You need one with the 10-speed automatic transmission and with Performance Pack 2. Engage Drag mode and off you go. Under 4 seconds from a stock Mustang GT. We are living in a true golden age for performance cars.

2. 2013 Shelby GT500 – 3.8 Seconds

662 horsepower is the headline figure here. Ten years ago, that was an unheard-of amount of power for anything short of a supercar. But here it is stuffed under the hood of a Shelby GT500. The 5.8L supercharged V8 engine could launch this car to 60 mph in a blistering 3.8 seconds. Only one Mustang is quicker than that.

1. 2020 Shelby GT500 – 3.6 Seconds

As if 662 horsepower wasn’t enough Ford managed to get nearly 100 more ponies under the hood of the 2020 Shelby GT500. That was good enough to shave .2 seconds off the 0 to 60 time compared to the previous GT500. And this new car just dominated from there. 11.3 seconds in the quarter mile at a trap speed of 132 mph. This car is easily the quickest production Mustang ever made. So far…
