This article applies to the Ford Mustang V6 and Mustang GT (2005-2014).

The power window motor in your Ford Mustang allows your window to move up and down on command. The window motor is housed inside the door panel and relies on various parts to operate properly: the window switch first initiates the signal that is sent through the wiring harness, then the motor powers the actuator that actually carries the glass up and down. As time goes by, the wear and tear of this item is enough to break it, rendering it useless. Follow this guide to learn how to remove and replace your Mustang's power window motor.

Materials Needed

  • Flat head and Phillips screwdriver (regular and large)
  • 11mm socket and ratchet wrench
  • Pliers
  • Willing assistant

Step 1 – Disconnect battery

Start by using the 11mm socket and ratchet to undo the negative (black) terminal on your battery.

Step 2 – Remove door panel

With the battery power disconnected, it is time to remove the door panel. Follow these steps:

  • Start by using the flat head screwdriver to pop out the eight plastic screws around the door's perimeter.
  • Use the flat head screwdriver to pop out the power window and lock switch panel.
  • Disconnect the wiring harness.
  • Get a firm grip on the door panel and gently wiggle it out of place.

Step 3 – Remove power window motor

With the door panel out of the way, it's time to remove the old power window motor and install the new and functioning one. Follow these steps:

  • Peel the water shield from a corner and gently remove it. (Don't tear it or cut it.)
  • Use the 11mm socket and ratchet wrench to remove all the bolts that hold the power window motor and actuator assembly in place.
  • If window is stuck up, you need the assistance of someone else to hold the window up while motor is being removed.
  • Gently pull old motor and actuator assembly out from inside the door opening.

Step 4 – Install new power window motor

Installing the new power window motor works in reverse order as it was removed. Use the following steps:

  • Insert new power window motor and actuator assembly into the door.
  • Insert and tighten down the 11mm bolts.
  • Re-position the water shield.
  • Re-position the door panel.
  • Reconnect power window and lock wiring harness.
