This article applies to the Ford Mustang V6 and Mustang GT (2005-2014).

If you wish to swap out the old gas cap on your 2005 to 2014 Ford Mustang, then you're in luck. You won't need to visit a local auto body repair shop to have the modification done. You can simply complete the modification on your own using these simple, straightforward instructions. The entire process takes just 15 to 30 minutes of your time, and you won't need to leave your home garage once you get started. Best of all, the entire modification requires just one easy-to-use tool, which, if you're like most do-it-yourselfers, you will already have as part of your home toolbox. Finding a replacement gas cap is easy. All you have to do is go online or visit an auto parts retailer. Prices start at just $50; however, more expensive varieties are also available. Custom gas caps can can also be purchased, if a custom look is what you prefer.

Materials Needed

  • Wrench
  • Automotive lubrication such as WD-40
  • New gas cap

Step 1 – Pop the trunk

You'll need to pop your trunk to gain access to the nut that fastens the retaining cable to the inside of your trunk.

Step 2 – Remove the nut

Grab your wrench and use it to remove the nut. Depending on how tightly the nut is fastened, you might need to use some muscle to unfasten it. To avoid stripping the nut while you work, wet the entire surface area of the nut with a high quality lubricant; we recommend using WD-40 lubricant for this job. Allow the lubricant to work for a moment or two before applying more muscle. Remove the nut entirely using your wrench.

Step 3 – Remove the old cap

Now that the nut has been removed, pull off the old cap by hand.

Step 4 – Install a new gas cap

Line up the cable as well as cap correctly, and then reinsert the nut. It's recommended that you make final adjustments to the cable and cap before tightening the nut one last time.
