Ford Mustang V6 and GT 2005-2014: How to Change Automatic Transmission Fluid
The automatic transmission uses fluid for cooling, shifting, and torque converter operation. Dirt and heat deteriorate the condition of the fluid quickly, resulting in damage to numerous components inside. A periodic drain and fill is the number one way to keep your transmission trouble-free.
This article applies to the Ford Mustang V6 and GT (2005-2014).
Once you start your engine, a pump behind the torque converter transfers fluid throughout the transmission. Fluid pressure is used to engage bands and clutches during gear changes. Simultaneously, the heat created during gear changes is dissipated as the fluid circulates. Transmission fluid also contains additives as well as conditioners to reduce the wear between the clutches and bands. When temperatures reach near or over 300 degrees, the fluid breaks down and becomes permanently damaged. Dirt from external leaks will accelerate the decomposition of the fluid, as well.
Materials Needed
- 7/8" wrench or socket
- T30 Torx bit
- 1/2" ratchet
- Fluid pump
- Fluid fill adapter
- 5 quarts of Mercon V transmission fluid
- Jack stands (x2)
- Floor jack
- Rubber gloves
- Safety glasses
- Drain pan
Step 1 – Raise the front of the vehicle
The vehicle needs to be leveled or on a level surface for an accurate reading. Engage the emergency brake. Position the floor jack below one of the jacking points on the front of the vehicle. Once your desired height is achieved, place a jack stand as close to the jacking point as possible. Repeat this procedure for the other corners. Blocks of wood can be placed between the jack stands and body to reduce the chance of damage.
Step 2 – Drain the ATF
Using a 7/8" socket or wrench, remove the drain plug once your drain pan is placed underneath.
Step 3 – Fill the transmission
Re-install the fill plug and remove the center Torx bolt with a T30 Torx bit. Once removed, install the fluid fill adapter. Pump four to five quarts of fluid into the transmission.
This fluid must be Mercon V compatible. Remove the pump outlet hose and re-install the Torx bolt once the fluid begins to drip out of the adapter.
