Ford Mustang GT 2005-2014: How to Replace Air Filter

Whether you're looking for more power or better fuel economy, changing out a dirty air filter with a new one is something that you should do on schedule.

This article applies to the Ford Mustang GT (2005-2014).

There are many options available to you in the aftermarket. Some are simply paper filters like a stock filter that are designed to flow a little more freely, while others are washable and reusuable. Stock filters can be found for as little as $8, while purchasing a reusable filter like a K&N can run you more than $50.

While you won't notice a significant increase in horsepower or fuel mileage, there are plenty of examples in the real world where Mustangs and other performance cars can gain a little bit of an increase by installing a free flowing aftermarket filter. Much will also hinge on any other performance parts you might have installed on your ride.

Material Needed

  • New air filter

Step 1 – Remove the old air filter

Pop the hood and lift it up. Look for the black box located in front of your engine, which has an air outlet going to your engine's intake manifold. Unhook the two tabs located on the side of the air filter box that hold the lid in place. Lift the lid off of the box. Pull the old filter out of the air box and discard.

Step 2 – Install the new air filter

Set the new filter inside the air box, making sure it is facing the same direction as the old filter. Some filters have arrows on the side to indicate which direction they should face to ensure proper air flow. Set the air box lid over the air box and push down on it. Secure the two tabs to lock the lid back in place.
