Ford Mustang GT 2005-2014: How to Install Wheel Spacer

Wheel spacers push your wheels away from the car, getting them closer to your wheel wells for a superior look. This article will show you how to install them on your Mustang.

This article applies to the Ford Mustang GT (2005-2014).

Your wheel is mounted onto the hum by the wheel studs and lug nuts. However, if your wheels are too far sunken in the wheel well, that's not good. This can result in the wheel or tire contacting the suspension, which is not good, or even worse, have people laughing at your car during the local Tuesday Mustang Corral

Materials Needed

  • Floor jack
  • 2 jack stands
  • Ratchet
  • 21mm socket
  • 19mm socket
  • Torque wrench

Step 1 – Jack up the car

Jack up the car and place it on jack stands. Loosen the lug nuts on the first wheel you intend to install a spacer on with a ratchet and 21mm socket, or an impact wrench if you have one. Move to the other side and remove the wheel. Set both wheels aside and out of the way.

Step 2 – Install spacers

Remove the single retaining clip from each of the two wheels. Remove the spacer nuts from each spacer with a 19mm socket. Slide the spacer on the wheel hub and install the spacer nuts with the rounded edge facing inward. Tighten the nuts with a 19mm socket in a star pattern, starting with the upper right-hand nut and moving clockwise, skipping a nut each time until all are tightened. Using a torque wrench, torque each nut to 100 ft-lbs, also in a star pattern.

Step 3 – Reinstall wheels

Place each wheel over the studs on the spacer and reinstall the lug nuts. Tighten in a star pattern and torque to specs. Check the spacing between the tires and the wheel wells, turning the steering wheel side-to--side to ensure there is adequate clearance before test driving.
