Motor Trend magazine has reported that the Mustang Boss will make its reappearance in 2008. There are plans in the works for a complete redesign of the Ford Mustang for the 2009 model year so the appearance of the Boss in 2008 is a great way to transition into the new design. The proposed availability of the Mustang Boss has created quite a stir and Mustang fans are chomping at the bit to find out just a little bit more about the car. In fact, there are all kinds of rumors going around about how the 2008 Boss Mustang will appear, its power and performance, and other features. Power and Performance
The power and performance of the 2008 Boss is predicted to incorporate a displacement engine that will be capable of powering out 390 horsepower! The supposed 5.0-liter engine has no supercharger and the horsepower is actually naturally aspirated! Of course, there are some people who anonymously slip information out of the design meetings and spread them to the public. One such rumor from an individual working on the design team of the 2008 Boss says a 6.2-liter engine with the same 390 naturally aspirated horsepower will power the vehicle rather than the previously quoted 5.0-liter engine. It seems hard to believe, but one of these engines is what Ford supposedly has in store for the 2008 Boss.
So far the actual engine that will be used has not been announced, although there is a lot of speculation and intrigue. Lots of Mustang fans out there are hoping and crossing their fingers that the engine used on the 2008 Boss is the pushrod engine that was utilized on the pre-1995 Mustangs. This is just a hope by some Mustang fans and it might actually work out this way. However, Ford has not said 100% one-way or the other. Everyone will just have to put forth his or her best guess and wait until the 2008 model year!
As far as the vehicle's suspension goes the word on the street is that the suspensions from the GT 500 will be used. In order to get the most out of the suspension it is rumored that the Boss' interior will be designed in a way to minimize weight and maximize the vehicle's power. The GT500 had some weight issues that were the cause of frustration and complaint by many Mustang enthusiasts so the Boss will more than likely be as light as possible to make the most of its 390 horsepower.
If the Boss is developed and produced as it is supposedly planned to be then the result will simply be outstanding. The result will be a muscle car that is light like a V6, has more power than even the GT, and is more affordable than the Shelby GT.
Other Possibilities
Then again, there is speculation that the 2008 Mustang won't have the Boss in the lineup at all and that it will come later on down the road. There is speculation that the Mach 1 or Bullitt Mustang could make a comeback in either 2008 or 2009. If this happens there is speculation as to the niche engine that has been in development is for that particular Mustang.
The niche engine would be an engine that is produced in limited quantities as a high performance engine. This would be a similar engine to the Mustang Mach 1 or SVT Cobra Mustangs.
Supposedly, the niche engine would have 4.6 liters, an aluminum block, special valve heads, a distinctive intake manifold, and GT "40" variant cylinder heads. So, only time will show whether the Bullitt, Mach 1, or Boss shows up as part of the Ford Mustang lineup.
The Competition
The Chevy Camaro or the Challenger is supposedly going to reappear on the market as well. This would produce significant competition for the Ford Mustang so Ford is definitely making plans for the introduction of a Mustang that will equal the Camaro/Challenger specs or perhaps beat them. There is speculation that when the Chevy vehicle is introduced Ford will have its vehicle ready for competition. Nobody is sure if a feature car will be ready at this point for introduction or if the Ford competition will be a juiced up Mustang. Only time will tell!
Final Thoughts
We won't know until Ford makes a more formal announcement exactly what the 2008 Boss will be, but it could be the vehicle Mustang fans have been waiting for. If the Boss is all that it is proposed and rumored to be then 2008 will more than likely be a hot year for Ford and the Mustang. If a Mach 1 or Bullitt is introduced instead of the Boss then sales should still be pretty good as well. Who knows whether it will be a 4.6 liter niche engine, 5.0 liter engine, or 6.2 liter engine, other than designers of the particular vehicle that will be released. Mustang fans will just have to sit back and wait with excitement for the new Mustang lineup that will be introduced for 2008!
