The 2004 Ford Mustang

2004 Mustang 40th Anniversary
What a year for the Mustang! Celebrating 40 years of success is an amazing accomplishment and the 2004 Mustang lives up to the last 40 years of achievement with upgraded interiors and exteriors, improved engines, and a commemorative badge on all fenders! For a muscle car that started out in April of 1964 as affordable, yet stylish, the basic personality of the car remains true almost half a decade later.

The different Mustang models available for 2004 are sure to please all consumers from those who love super fast muscle cars to others who like a stylish, yet comfortable sports car. Regardless, the 2004 Mustang is sure to please from exterior to interior and powertrain to transmission!

2004 Mustang Models

The 2004 Mustang models represent the anniversary of the Mustang and because of this there are many extras. For example, all base models come with a V6 engine while the higher performing GT models pack a punch with a V-8 engine. All models are available in coupe or convertible and the convertibles have a special boot to protect the top while it is down. Check out the Mustang models below to find out more features of the 2004 lineup.

The Mustang coupe and convertible, which differ in price by about $6000, have a standard 3.8 liter V6 engine, 190 horsepower, and 220 pounds per foot of torque. A four speed automatic transmission is optional and costs almost $1,000 more while the five speed manual is standard. Another option includes the ABS and traction control, but these are strongly recommended to all buyers because they are well worth the extra $700 to increase control and help avoid accidents. More standard equipment includes tilt steering column, air conditioning, floor console, interval windshield wipers, power windows and door locks, as well as a remote keyless entry system. Cloth bucket seats are also standard while any buyer can choose to upgrade to the super trendy leather trimmed bucket seats.

Three trim packages are available for the 2004 Mustang, including standard, deluxe, and premium. Those who choose the deluxe package pay about $700 more, but it is well worth it for speed control, colored floor mats, and a sporty spoiler. Those who don't mind paying another $700 above and beyond the deluxe package will receive all the deluxe features as well as leather wrapped steering wheel and power driver's seat with six way functions.

40th Anniversary Edition
Considering only 5700 anniversary editions were built these vehicles are designed in a way to commemorate the 40th anniversary. The front fenders have anniversary badges on them to celebrate the anniversary and upgrades are evident in the interior and exterior of the GT and V-6 models. For example, convertibles have a better top made of medium parchment that is longer lasting and reduces sound. Only three colors are available with this option that complement the performance stripes on the body of the car, enhanced wheels and interior as well.
Mustang GT
2004 Mustang GT
Like the rest of the 2004 lineup, the Mustang GT is available in coupe and convertible, both of which come standard with bucket seats and fog lamps. The V8 engine has 4.6 liters with single overhead cams and two valves per cylinder. The car is full of muscle with 260 horsepower and 302 pounds of torque. This is a lot of power and in order to regulate the force of the engine the vehicle boasts gas pressure shocks, a Traction Loc rear axle, ABS traction control, as well as P245/45R17 performance tires mounted on 17 inch alloy wheels. The V8 engine focuses on fuel efficiency, too, with a five speed manual gearbox with a fifth gear. However, consumers have the option of a four speed automatic. Those drivers who not only like muscle, but also an outstanding sound system may choose between the Mach 460 and the Mach 1000 sound systems for an extra sum of money of course.
Mach 1
The 2004 Mach 1 is outstanding and sports a whopping 310 horsepower with a 4.6 liter V8 engine. The engine is strong and powerful with four valves per cylinder and dual overhead cams. Since the Mach 1 is super sporty it gets special treatment with a suspension designed for its sports car status. This includes special struts and shocks, stiffer springs, and the car also sits lower. The Mach 1 also looks different with its exclusive 17 inch wheels, black shaker hood, and leather trimmed seats. There are other specialties, too, that include the six disc CD stereo in the dash, unique trim, and graphics on the car's body that set the Mach 1 apart from all other 2004 Mustangs.

The original Mach 1 from 1969 has become one of the most widely collected Mustangs and because of this the 2004 model resembles the original in many ways. For example, the shaker head scoop is included and the 5 spoke Heritage wheels sport the Mustang pony logo on the 2004 model, but all strongly resemble the late '60s through early '70s Mach 1 models.

Mach 1 customers may choose between some new colors including Screaming Yellow and Competition Orange. Only 5000 2004 Mach 1 Mustangs were produced, making it a challenge for consumers to buy the car of their dreams due to the high demand.

Cobra
2004 Ford Mustang Cobra
Of all the regular production Mustangs, the most powerful one to date is the 2004 Cobra. This vehicle is ultra powerful and full of muscle with a 4.6 Liter V-8 that is supercharged and ready to roll at a moment's notice. This powerful engine has a commanding 390 horsepower with an equal amount of torque. The manual gearbox has six-speeds that start the P275/40R17 tires rolling in a hurry. The Cobra is certainly strong and powerful, but the exceptional exterior and interior trim makes it luxurious, too.

Only 1,000 of these models were produced in 2004 with the MystiChrome Appearance package. One of the most unique features of this package is paint that changes color as the angle changes. For example, the car changes from black to purple to blue and then to green, or the opposite way around depending on the angles. The chrome wheels really set of this chameleon affect and make the Cobra an amazing Mustang in 2004.

Mustang Power
The Powertrain
Wow is what most people initially say when they realize the power of the 2004 Mustang's powertrain. This Mustang is one of a kind, yet is similar in many ways to the '60s Mustangs regarding its muscle, popularity, and price. The standard Mustang is smooth and strong, but the 2004 GT offers an even smoother ride with a suspension that allows the car to maneuver all types of highway and non-highway conditions. The power offered by the 2004 Mustang is incredible and will make any other muscle car green with jealousy.

A 3.8 liter OHV V6 engine is in the standard Mustang. It produces 193 horsepower and has 225 pounds of torque. This particular model is fuel efficient because of a split port induction engine, piston coatings that reduce friction and cylinder heads that enhance flow.

The GT models are more powerful with a V8 engine with 4.6 liter SOHC and 260 horsepower with 302 pounds of torque. This engine maximizes engine air intake to produce more horsepower with its large valves, high lift cams, and identical intake manifold runners. This particular model makes cranking the engine easier, too, with a coil on plug ignition system. This increases control and makes igniting the engine easier than ever. Additionally, the engine is designed for durability with an aluminum upper main, upper thrust, and rod bearings. Fuel efficiency is obtained through well designed combustion chambers.

The V6 and V8 engines for 2004 are similar in the fact that they have improved bearings and stiffer brackets. The Tremec TR3650 manual transmission makes the GT smoother and stronger. Also, the GT has a traction lock rear axle that allows whichever rear wheel with the most traction to grab onto the road and provide more control in uncertain road conditions.

All Mustangs have a retuned suspension, which is common in past Mustangs, too. The cool aspect of the suspension is that each wheel can react independently to whatever road conditions that particular wheel encounters. A deep pot hole on the front right of the vehicle will allow the front right wheel to react to the hole while the other wheels react to the smoothness of the road or other conditions encountered. This technology is thanks to the MacPherson strut front suspension that balances 57 percent of the vehicles weight in the front and 43 percent in the back, making this car nimble. All Mustangs are equipped with the power rack and pinion steering and four bar link rear suspension.

Anniversary Mustang Exterior Design

Looking at the 2004 Mustang it is easy to see design features resurfacing from the original Mustang design in 1964. The only difference in today's Mustang is the features are smoother and more rounded, but they are evident features from the past.

Starting from the back exterior of the 2004 Mustang it seems as if the car truly is from the mid '60s because the rear is accented by vertical tail lamps. As you move around the car, for example to the rear fender air intake, it's the '60s again, but more retro. Here the fender intake displays sharp corners with wheel well arches at the front and rear not to mention arched rocker panels. The front design displays the typical honeycomb grill and pony, as well as wraparound reflector headlamps and side marker lamps incorporated on the sides. The hood scoop also is taken from the '60s design, despite the fact it does not function and is just for looks.

The GT models have a bit different design that enhances the 2004 Mustang even more and makes it increasingly popular with consumers. The rear spoiler, fog lights, and treatments on the hood and side-scoop really make the GT unique and an amazing muscle car.

Another 2004 Mustang model is the Mach 1 and very few of these were produced despite the outstanding design. It has a shaker hood scoop that initiates a special trim on the car. The difference between the GT hood scoop and the scoop on the Mach 1 is location as well as design. The GT's hood scoop is placed on top of the car's hood, while the Mach 1's black scoop is attached to the engine and is revealed through a squared hole on the hood. Plus, the Mach 1 is designed in a way to emphasize the scoop with black stripes that extend across the hood. The reason the Mach 1's scoop is designed this way is in order to channel outside air into the engine for more power. You can even see this baby shudder with power when you rev the engine.

Another option for the anniversary year is the 40th Anniversary Package. Fortunately, this upgrade is cost free for 2004 Mustangs and includes Arizona Beige Metallic accented wheels that are 16 inches for the V6 and 17 inches for the GT. Also, the Arizona Beige Metallic makes its presence known on the hood, deck lid, and lower rocker panels as well. The 40th Anniversary Mustang is not available in all colors, however, and those wanting the free upgrades will choose from exteriors of Crimson Red, Oxford White, and Black.

2004 Mustang Interior Design

Amazingly, the 2004 Mustang's interior design rivals the exterior with all the new and improved features. One of the characteristics people seem to like the most is the fact that the interior is quieter than ever. This is because the body of the vehicle is sealed with foam to help keep excessive noise from wind down. Also, the driver will enjoy a seat that allows a comfortable drive for even the tallest drivers. The interior is about the same size as previous Mustang models, but is just a little more comfortable. Plenty of elbow room and comfortable seats make the interior a relaxing place to be. Each of the Mustang models has new and improved features, too.

40th Anniversary Package
When sliding into the cockpit of the 40th Anniversary Package Mustang the embroidered floor mats catch one's attention, as well as the center console that also boasts the anniversary logo. The interior has bonuses, too, including brushed aluminum throughout not to mention four way head restraints and even an updated center console.
Mach 1
A color scheme is incorporated with the center console, instrument panel, and console. Also, the GT instrument panel is easier on the eyes than the Mach 1's tachometer and speedometer that have tall and thin lettering and numbering that is difficult to read. However, the '60 styled headlight handle is cool and reminiscent of the past because you simply pull the handle and the lights turn on. There are also cup holders in the console in this model.

SVT Cobra
The Cobra's interior is outstanding and boasts leather trim on the front bucket seats that are accented by suede. The driver will also be comfortable because the seat allows for lumbar support not to mention thigh and side supports. The six way power allows the driver to adjust the seat to the level of support he needs. A boost gauge is included in this model and is located in the SVT instrument cluster. The electro-luminescent lighting accents the titanium colored gauges so the driver can easily read the gauges. Luxury doesn't stop here, however, because of the leather wrapped gearshift knob and the pedals that are metal trimmed.

Of course, this muscle car does not have a lot of room in the back, but it is sufficient for carrying small kids or other necessities. The interior space is affected by whether you choose a coupe or convertible, with the coupe having overall more room than the convertible and the convertible is smaller restricting hip and shoulder room a bit. Another fact is that if you want a muscle car, yet need lots of space for hauling cargo, you will need two vehicles. This is because the trunk space on the coupe is small at 11 cubic feet, and even smaller on the convertible at 7.7 cubic feet. The back seat does recline in order to increase cargo room, but there simply is not a lot of space.

2004 Mustang Safety

All 2004 Mustangs have standard air bags that protect passengers in the event of an accident. But, safety doesn't stop there! The seat belts have an advanced safety system and outboard pretensioners. This means seat belts are more comfortable and successful in saving lives and preventing injuries during an accident. Those families who drive Mustangs will enjoy the LATCH, which is the system for installing car seats easily safely. Also, the trunk release handle is another safety essential because it prevents children or adults from being trapped in the trunk.

Basically, the 2004 Mustang is a muscle and sports car, but it is also a safe vehicle that can control its power and maintain the safety of the passengers as well as avoid accidents.
