The 2001 Ford Mustang

2001 Ford Mustang
The fifth generation of Mustangs is incredible and still wildly popular, most likely because they still exhibit the features of the original 1964 Mustang. The Mustang is sporty, yet not tiny, and offers as many options as some luxury vehicles not to mention powerful engines that are fun for driving on or off the track.

The horsepower is powerful even on the base models, and the GT and higher Mustang models have even more horsepower and torque that really turn heads. An outstanding motor, amazing style, and new and improved options every year have allowed Mustang to achieve legendary status. This pony car offers the style and power that every sports car driver desires, yet at an amazingly affordable price that almost anyone can afford. The Mustang is a true legend that just keeps getting better. The 2001 Mustang is just another model year that managed to please consumers once again.

2001 Mustang Lineup

The 2001 Mustang offered quite a bit of variety for buyers from a base model to the ever popular and powerful Cobra. The V6 and V8 models each were available in a base trim with the option to upgrade to deluxe or premium trims. The GT Bullitt was also introduced this year based on a race car from the movie "Bullitt". The 2001 lineup was powerful and provided something for everyone.
Base V6 Model

The base V6 model was available in two trim levels, including deluxe and premium. There was also a base coupe offered that was the most affordable. Both the premium and deluxe models were available in convertible for those Mustang lovers who enjoy the sun on their faces and wind blowing through their hair. The V6 engine sported 190 horsepower created by a 3.8 liter overhead valve. Both manual and automatic transmissions were available, except in the convertible which only came with automatic.
Mustang GT
2001 Mustang GT
The 2001 Mustang GT was available in coupe or convertible, with a 4.6 liter overhead-cam V8 engine and 260 horsepower. Hood and side scoops adorn the GT, although they are not functional they do set the GT apart. The 17 inch rims are yet another distinguishing factor of the GT. Few changes were made to the 2001 GT, simply because it is not worthwhile to "fix" something that is not broken.
Cobra
2001 Ford Mustang Cobra
The powerful Cobra came from the factory in 2001 ready to race. The V8 engine with 320 horsepower and a 32 valve dual overhead cam made this vehicle strong and full of muscle. A five speed transmission is the only option in the Cobra, and it really helps drivers get the full power out of the vehicle.
The 2001 Ford Mustang Bullitt
2001 Ford Mustang Bullitt
A 1968 Mustang GT was driven by actor Steve McQueen, known as Frank Bullitt, in the 1968 move "Buillitt." The car was used in an outstanding chase scene in the hills of San Francisco. Although the movie is not the most popular of all time, it does have a big following that Mustang is targeting with the 2001 edition of the Mustang GT. However, the 2001 and 1968 Mustang GT are not exactly the same car, despite sharing some similar qualities. For example, both of these editions have a similar solid rear axle suspension with an independent front as well as a rear wheel drive chassis and front engine layout. However, this is where the similarities stop. One major difference is the engines. The 1968 Mustang GT had 390 cubic inches that offered plenty of power. The 2001 Bullitt has a 281 cubic inch 4.6 liter single overhead cam V8. Also, the 2001 model is sportier and more powerful thanks to some small changes in the engine and chassis. The exterior was enhanced in ways the '68 GT was not, as well as an improved interior on the Bullitt. Of course, those individuals who want the enhanced Bullitt will pay for it since the package costs approximately $3700 more than the Mustang GT base price.

The 2001 Mustang Bullitt has only three colors, including black, true blue, and dark highland green. The green color is similar to the GT's green color in the movie, and is the inspiration behind the color. The '68 GT is also remembered with the 2001's five spoke alloy wheels. The rear of the Mustang boasts "Bullitt" while the gas cap is specialized with brushed aluminum. The hood scoop adds muscle to the car, despite being non functional, and really sets the Bullitt apart.

Powertrain & Chassis

The 2001 Mustang is all about power, performance, and pride. The base model offers a V6 engine with split port 3.8 liter as well as 190 horsepower and 220 foot pound of torque. The base model boasts a 3.27:1 rear axle ratio just like all of the other 2001 models regardless of the transmission or engine. This is a design trait initiated in 1999 that worked well and remained part of the design.

The 4.6 liter V8 powers out 260 horsepower and 302 pounds of torque. With all this power the performance is outstanding and the vehicle sounds wonderful in all driving situations. The V8 engine for the GT received some revisions including intake manifold runners, camshafts, and improved airflow with larger valves. The ignition system was also changed for a new coil on plug ignition system with higher energy sparks.

The transmissions for both the V6 and V8 are perfect matches for the engines and are capable of supporting it with power and strength for years and years. No matter whether you buy a base or GT model with automatic or manual transmission you will enjoy the smooth shifts and the big feeling gearbox. Clean shifting can be difficult at times because the clutch is a little longer than necessary, but it is not impossible to achieve.

Although not available on the base model, traction control now is standard on the premium V6 as well as all V8 Mustangs. This increases the driver's control of the vehicle. Regardless, the 2001 Mustang is a driver's car and really makes driving enjoyable. Not to mention the car grips the road well when cornering and no longer drives choppy like generations past. The car drives smooth thanks to the rear suspension, a new and improved braking system, better steering, and overall improvement of the vehicle's design.

Anti Lock Brakes are also available on all V6 and V8 Mustangs, either standard or as an option. However, the base V6 does not have the option of ABS. ABS is truly an important feature because it gives the driver more control when braking. This can help the driver avoid accidents or simply increase control.

Exterior

The 2001 Mustang design is very similar to the '99 model, which was based on the original Mustang's design. Of course, despite echoing design features from the original Mustang, the 2001 model is considerably more modern with its rounded angles and contemporary features.

Of course, not all features of the Mustang are modernistic. There are sharp lines around the rear fender air intake that make it more retro while curved rocker panels accentuate the union of past and present. The well arches on the front and rear are very evident. The fender badges are notable and tri-colored while the hood scoop gives the car extra muscle power although it is not functional. The GT models are also suited up a bit more with a rear spoiler, fog lights, and even side scoop treatments.

The wheels are excellent and are a bit different depending on what model Mustang you purchase. The sizes range from 15-17 inches and each has a spoke design that is flat and really balances the body design.

The 2001 exterior colors of the Mustang are various giving fans plenty of choices. Some colors such as dark highland green were reserved for certain models like the Bullitt, however the majority of the colors apply for all models. These include zinc yellow, performance red, tropic green, true blue, electric green, black, mineral gray, silver, laser red, and oxford white.

2001 Mustang Interior

2001 Mustang Interior
The base V6 model was The 2001 Mustang has an improved interior that makes driving and riding more comfortable than ever. The seats are significantly more comfortable than past Mustang seats and the seat belts are connected to the seat making it easy to slide the seat up or back without having the seat belt affect comfort. Base models are upholstered in a soft fabric, however leather upholstery is an option on some models and comes standard on the GT Premium. The seats also reflect the Mustang's history with running ponies embroidered on the backrests.

Some new changes consumers enjoyed were the front cup holder that was placed in a new location, increasing convenience. The center console was also redesigned and the rear cup holder was increased in size. New additions for the 2001 Mustang included a power outlet as well as a tissue holder. Standard fare for the Mustang increased this year as well with an electric rear window defroster. Coupe interiors ranged in color depending on the exterior color of the car and the model. These ranged from Oxford White, Dark Charcoal, Medium Graphite, and Medium Parchment.

Similar to other models the seat track increased in length, so even tall drivers could find comfort in the otherwise small cockpit. The previously cramped elbowroom increased a bit in space so drivers and companions could ride in comfort. Keeping with traditional Mustang style, the back seat remained tiny and certainly not large enough for adults. Of course, carrying your groceries or even small children is an option. The trunk is super small, too, and although the rear seat folds down to increase cargo room there is still not enough room to carry much of anything, at least not of the large variety.

Now that you are both comfortable in the 2001 Mustang as well as enjoying the improved driving experience you will be excited to learn of the premium sound system. At 80 watts the standard system is anything but standard, it is in fact outstanding! CD and cassette options are available and for a standard sound system Mustang consumers rave. Of course, those who want more power and watts can upgrade. The 230 watt Mach 460 system offers 10 speakers and all the listening pleasure you can possibly imagine. This is an option in the Deluxe models, but comes standard in the GTs and Premium trim Mustangs.

2001 Mustang Price

As always, the Mustang offered plenty of power and performance for the 2001 model, yet did so at affordable prices. The Standard Coupe was affordable to almost all new car buyers at approximately $17,000. The Standard Convertible was $22,410, the GT $22,630 and the GT Convertible $28,035. With the Mustang consumers get all they desire from a sports car, including plenty of options, for an affordable price. Mustang has been around for decades and as long as it keeps up its continued performance it will be around for many decades more.
