FRONT END ACCESSORY DRIVE (FEAD) BELT - BELT NOISE, DAMAGE, AND/OR BELT COMES OFF - VEHICLES WITH 4.6L ENGINE AND MANUAL TRANSMISSION
Publication Date: OCTOBER 5, 1998
This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to include the latest level parts.
The Front End Accessory Drive (FEAD) belt may become broken or frayed and/or detach from (or roll off of) the engine. This may be caused by deceleration of the engine.
Replace the water pump pulley with a new flanged-type water pump pulley and tensioner. The flanged pulley and tensioner should reduce the possibility of belt damage and belt roll-off. Refer to the following Service Procedure for replacement details.
Remove FEAD belt and discard.
Verify that the vehicle has the new flanged water pump pulley installed (Figure 1). If raised flange pulley is not installed, remove and discard water pump pulley. Install new Water Pump Pulley (F6ZZ-8509-AA) and torque bolts to 20-30 N-m (15-22 lb-ft).

THE POWER STEERING PULLEY MUST BE PRESSED ON 0.67mm PAST THE END OF THE SHAFT (FIGURE 2).
Figure 2 - Article 98-20-18
Verify that the vehicle has the new power steering pulley installed (Figure 3). If raised flange pulley is not installed, remove and discard the power steering pulley. Install new Power Steering Pulley (F7ZZ-3A733-AA).
Figure 3 - Article 98-20-18
On the bottom of the power steering pump there is a power steering line orientation clip that is mounted with a single fastener. Remove and discard the clip. Install the replacement Power Steering Orientation Clip (F7ZZ-3E523-AA).
Locate the automatic belt tensioner. If a tensioner positive stop is installed over the tensioner and the part number stamped on the bottom of the positive stop is F7ZE-19A439-AB, remove and discard the positive stop and belt tensioner.
If the positive tensioner stop was not installed on the vehicle, remove the three (3) fasteners that mount the automatic belt tensioner. Retain the nut. Discard the tensioner, belt guide and both bolts (Figure 4).

Install the new steel Tensioner (F8ZZ-6B209-BA) using one (1) existing stud and two (2) new Studs (N807336-S2) (Figure 5). Torque the studs and nuts to 20-30 N-m (15-22 lb-ft).

Install a new FEAD Belt (F8AZ-8620-AA).
Install the Tensioner Positive Stop (F7ZZ-19A439-AC) onto the two (2) studs that mount the tensioner (Figure 5). Fasten the stop bracket with two (2) Nuts (N804178-S309). Torque the nuts to 20-30 N-m (15-22 lb-ft).
