  • INTERIOR TRIM - CENTER CONSOLE - AVAILABILITY OF GAP HIDER FOR CENTER CONSOLE - VEHICLES BUILT FROM 6/1/96
Publication Date: DECEMBER 2, 1996

FORD:
1996-1997 MUSTANG

ISSUE:

The center console-to-parking brake handle gap hider is now available for service as a separate part. Previously, the gap hider was only available as part of the center console.

ACTION:

On vehicles built after 6/1/96, the center console added extra mounting tabs to accommodate replacement of the center console-to-parking brake handle without replacing the entire center console. If replacement of the gap hider becomes necessary, refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

  1. Remove the center console, referring to the appropriate year Mustang Service Manual, Section 01-12.
  2. If the parking brake lever was not properly aligned, realign the lever following the Service Procedure outlined in TSB 95-17-3
  3. Remove the gap hider from the center console by trimming off the heat stake tabs that are retaining the gap hider. Do not trim off the unused heat stake tabs. They will be used to secure the new gap hider.
  4. Place the new gap hider and retainer onto the remaining heat stakes and melt over the tabs using a soldering iron or similar tool. Once the tabs cool, make sure the gap hider and retainer are securely in place.
  5. Reinstall the center console, referring to the appropriate year Mustang Service Manual, Section 01-12.
