  • BRAKES - FRONT DISC - "THUMPING/CLACKING" NOISE WHILE BRAKING
  • NOISE - "THUMPING/CLACKING" WHILE BRAKING - FRONT DISC BRAKES
Publication Date: NOVEMBER 14, 1994

FORD:
1994-1995 MUSTANG, TAURUS, THUNDERBIRD
LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1994-1995 CONTINENTAL, COUGAR, SABLE

ISSUE:

Some customers may hear a thumping/clacking noise proportional to wheel speed during braking. This may be due to the initial cut (finish) on the front rotors and by the shoe/lining assembly contacting the leading edge of the caliper assembly abutment. If this condition exists, witness marks will be visible on the shoe/lining assembly plate, and the caliper anchor plate. Brake performance is unaffected by this condition.

ACTION:

Refer to the following procedure for service details.

NOTE:THIS CONCERN IS EXHIBITED ON A LIMITED NUMBER OF VEHICLES WITH 500 MILES (800 KM) OR LESS. HOWEVER, IT SHOULD BE GONE BY 500 MILES (800 KM).

SERVICE PROCEDURE

  1. Ensure that the vehicle has more than 500 miles (800 km) of service.
  2. Turn both front rotors with a Rotunda "On-The-Car Brake Lathe". This repair method is more effective than "off-car" brake rotor turning because it allows the steering knuckle to serve as a pilot for the rotor, resulting in improved runout and surface finish.

NOTE:USE THE APPROPRIATE MODEL/YEAR SERVICE MANUAL, SECTION 06-03.
