Oil leaks and broken cylinder head bolts may occur if the head bolts are not tightened properly.
The latest level of cylinder head gasket and cylinder head bolts are recommended for head gasket service repairs. The newly released cylinder head gasket and cylinder head bolts require a different service procedure for all 1992 and past model engines. If service is required, refer to the following procedures for cylinder head gasket replacement and cylinder bolt "Torque Plus Angle" steps which provide better and more uniform sealing.
THE NEW DESIGN CYLINDER HEAD GASKET AND CYLINDER HEAD BOLTS ARE UNIQUELY DIFFERENT FROM THE PRODUCTION AND PREVIOUSLY DESIGNED PARTS. BECAUSE OF THIS DIFFERENCE, THE NEW CYLINDER HEAD BOLTS (F3ZZ-6065-A) ARE THE ONLY BOLTS THAT CAN BE USED WITH THE NEW CYLINDER HEAD GASKET (F3ZZ-6051-C). IF A PREVIOUSLY RELEASED CYLINDER HEAD GASKET IS TO BE USED, OR IF CYLINDER HEAD BOLTS ARE NOT AVAILABLE FOR USE WITH THE NEW HEAD GASKET (F3ZZ-6051-C), THE PREVIOUSLY RELEASED CYLINDER HEAD GASKET AND CYLINDER HEAD BOLTS MUST BE USED. FAILURE TO PROPERLY TORQUE THE CYLINDER HEAD GASKET CAN LEAD TO AN IMPROPER SEALING SURFACE, WHICH CAN RESULT IN A LEAKING CONDITION AND BROKEN BOLTS.
Remove the cylinder head. Refer to the appropriate Service Manual for cylinder head removal, cleaning and inspection procedures.
With the cylinder block and cylinder head properly prepared, install the new cylinder head gasket (F3ZZ-6051-C) on the cylinder block.
THE CAMSHAFT USED WITH THIS ENGINE MUST BE PROPERLY POSITIONED AS SHOWN IN THE SERVICE MANUAL TO ENSURE PROPER TIMING ALIGNMENT.
With the camshaft in the proper position, install the cylinder head onto the cylinder head gasket.
Install all ten (10) cylinder head bolts (F3ZZ-6065-A) into the cylinder block, finger tight.
Use the new "Torque Plus Angle" procedure as follows only for the new head gasket and new bolts.
Tighten all ten (10) cylinder head bolts in the sequence shown in the Service Manual to 70 N-m (51 lb-ft).
Retighten all ten (10) cylinder head bolts in the sequence shown in the Service Manual to 70 N-m (51 lb-ft).
Tighten all ten (10) cylinder head bolts in the sequence shown in the Service Manual an additional 90-100°.
Refer to the appropriate Service Manual and continue with the procedures after the torquing procedure listed for the cylinder head reinstallation.
