NOISE - "RATTLING" - T5OD TRANSMISSION IN SECOND GEAR - VEHICLES WITH 2.3L/5.0L ENGINES
TRANSMISSION - MANUAL - T5OD - GEAR NOISE IN SECOND GEAR - VEHICLES WITH 2.3L/5.0L ENGINES
Publication Date: FEBRUARY 12, 1992
A "rattling" noise may be heard when the transmission is engaged in second gear. This happens because the bolt (F2ZZ-7N322-A), used to anchor the reverse fork crossover assist spring, is sometimes being mistaken for the fill plug and being removed from the transmission case in error when checking fluid levels. When this occurs, it allows the reverse crossover assist spring to drop down in the transmission case resulting in a rattling noise in second gear.
When checking or adding transmission fluid, remove the fill plug located in the center of the transmission case on the right hand side.
Remove the fill plug using a 3/8" (9.525mm) ratchet and expansion bar.
DO NOT REMOVE THE HEX HEADED BOLT LOCATED BELOW THE BACK-UP LAMP SWITCH. THIS BOLT IS NOT A FILL PLUG.
Check the transmission Fluid. It should be to the bottom of the fill plug.
