Okay, here's the deal, let's say you just picked up a 2006 Mustang GT a few weeks ago, have the 1000 break in miles on and now you are looking to mod.
You want to start slowly and want to spend around $2K in mods first. Right now your priority is increasing engine power. You don't want to make the car obnoxiously loud though.
What are the best "basic" mods for this car to get increased power. My guess would be CAI High Flow Cat Back Exhaust ECU tune? Not sure if that yields much on this car.
Insight please and what kind of power gains can I truely expect?
I went with a Magnaflow exhaust w/ high flow cats and x-pipe, a Diablo tune, a CAI, and underdrive pulleys to start. That gave me great results and great driveability. I have added to that and am headed to a Diablo tuner for a complete Dyno tune next friday. Opening the breathing was a big help, but all these claims by CAI companys that you do not need a tune are misleading. If you go CAI and exhaust, you need at least a canned tune.
You've heard of the Y pipe.. the X pipe.. the H pipe.. nothing can touch the O pipe!!! It provides 100% back pressure feedback on ALL engines!! Torque increase and kuneutson valve float brings in much lower revs so you don't hurt your motor! Not CARB Legal. Please specify standard or polished finish. Product shown is dual input O-Pipe with standard finish.
I'm ordering all my mods in a week or two once I receive my tax return back...
FRPP headers: 400 (coated) PRO-50 shifter: 290 intake/tuner/pulleys: 700 (RPMoutlet's C&L predator and pulley package) Flowmaster Axleback: 280 Mezeire elec w/p: 330 (including wiring and relay) ***************** total cost: $2,000 even (n/i tax)
*************************** not too sure about the pulleys and the pump.... there was another thread on this but people swear by their pulley swap kits. 3 minor pulley size changes shouldn't come close to touching the power gain of completely eliminating the water pump especially considering that the waterpump sucks the most power out of the engine as it's the hardest to turn...we shall see.
I think the tuner is the most significant, since they allow you to take advantage of 91 octane. Ford holds this back on the stock tune. The ford tune has some refinement factors -- it softens tip in and pulls the throttle back near redline.
After that, only nitrous or S/C gives you bang for the buck, IMO.

Why get pulleys and an electric water pump? IMO, get the tuner/intake package with either pulleys or the water pump. Then get a high quality set of long tube headers and your Flowmasters.

...because every little bit helps... people say pulleys free up 10-12, no reason waterpump and pulleys can't free up 20...i know i know people see no results...but think of it this way... if slightly changing the size of 3 pulleys gives you 12hp or so, then why wouldn't completely eliminating the pulley w/ the most drag give you tons more power? and no such thing as alternator strain making up for the lack waterpump....the alternator puts out generally the same amperage depending on speed, accessories drawing more juice doesn't force your alternator to "work harder" it just can't supply everything and return that power to your batter...thats why all the lights dim on those ricers with 2000watt amps...
i should have everything complete in the next 2 months or so... then I'll dyno and see what my rear wheel hp is...i'm hoping to get to like 300rwhp... stock it's like 260-270ish to the wheels but I'm in denver at 5800 feet of altitude so it's probably closer to 240-250 if i'm lucky...so 50rwhp is probably a stretch with just $2k in bolt-ons but it'll be a good test...we'll see
(in response to DAVE05GT); of course i'd get the most hp from long tubes, but A: they're a hell of a lot more money for a decent set, and B: I'd have to change out the stock mid-pipe to make it all fit together, that's extra money i can't justify seeing as how the stock H-pipe given it's diameter from headers to pipes is good to like 500hp (or so i've heard here and other places)

With 2 grand you shouldn't be looking for "every little bit helps," you need most bang for the buck. Mac and Hooker long tubes aren't much more than FRPP shorties and about the same as JBA shorties. If your willing to spend the money on a water pump that most likely won't make much difference with the pulleys, why not just spend it on a midpipe to with the LT's, which have proven their worth on many 3V's.
