For those of you who have an '06 (or '05 i suppose) GT Auto trans, i have a question.
when i accelerate hard, my stang makes this strange noise that i can only describe as a "whistle". honestly it just sounds like the car is sucking in a ton of air or something to that effect, but then it stops after i'm in 2nd gear or so - and all i can hear is the great stock rumble of the engine as i continue to accelerate - no whistling sounds.
my stang is still stock under the hood, and it's made this sound since the first day. I'm just wondering if anyone else has had this experience (maybe even some of you people with manuals hear it too?). it doesn't sound like a problem, but i'm curious what might be the cause of that sound, as i've never heard it on a mustang before. granted i drove a '98 v6 before my '06GT - two completely different animals...but it still is a bit strange to hear this noise coming from a car....
eh....anyway...if you know what i'm talking about, cool....hopefully i'm not the only one hearing this...hahaha.

In first gear of my 5 spd manual (and to a lesser extent, most cars I have owned, all makes) you hear a transmission "whir" in first more than any other gear.
I think the first gear whir is more pronounced in my Mustang though..guessing it is because tranny is heavy duty, with the higher ratio of first gear is rotating quickly, and engine sound is a separate,deeper/lower freq than in the other vehicles.
I think this high freq sound stands out due to higher rotating frequency of tranny compared to slower rolling tires and lower freq chassis vibrations at low speeds.

makes sense to me...like i said....doesn't sound like a "bad" sound - just was wondering what could be making that sound....and the way you described it fits perfectly. so i think you're right.
thanks for the info.

BlackB you are not hearing thing's my 06 gt auto makes the same sound, and it sounds like a whistle.Only when i get on it hard never when driving normal.I quess it's normal if others are hearing the same sound time will tell.
My '06 auto GT also whistles, most noticeably in second gear...it has since new. It definitely sounds like an air intake sound, to me. Personally, I like it...at certain throttle openings/loads, the motor sounds carbureted.
alright, so it's normal, and i should learn to appreciate it.
i can do that

Yes it's normal. My 05 auto did it from day one. It sounds like a blower under the hood somewhat.
