View Full Version : spinning drive shaft? zex92mustang 01-19-2006, 10:56 PM i change the gears in my 94 5.0 from 3.08 to 3.73 and now im getting a vibration at 110 km. some people where saying to spin the drive shaft, how much should i spin it and what direction. thanks cammedlx 01-19-2006, 11:04 PM 180 degrees...dosen't matter what direction as long as you mount it oposite of where is was previous.. zex92mustang 01-19-2006, 11:07 PM some guys said 90, should i try 90 then drive it and try it than do the other 90, that would make 180, or is that just a wast of time cammedlx 01-19-2006, 11:08 PM You could do it that way...just what ever you feel most comfortable with really.. stanglx2002 01-20-2006, 12:09 AM i would do it 90 bc thats all it took for my car Tims 88GT 01-20-2006, 01:36 AM humm im a lil lost here, someone fill me in, why would you rotate the drive shaft? i took mine off when i put gears in and i never thought about puttin it back right or not i thought you would just bolt it up. thanks stanglx2002 01-20-2006, 08:51 AM sometimes the driveshaft doesnt sit excatly level/balanced so when you clock the driveshaft 90 degrees it levels everything back out 88BlueGT 01-20-2006, 04:04 PM OOOOOOO I didnt know that either.. Saves myself a post in a couple months :D 4eyedfreak 01-20-2006, 06:09 PM I dint even pay attention when i did it and i do it alot. O well i have not had a problem yet stanglx2002 01-20-2006, 07:25 PM what you could od it mark the rearend and the sriveshaft with a whiteout pen so it goes back in the same spot as it came off Tims 88GT 01-20-2006, 07:28 PM yeah i have a slight vibration maby ill try that. should i pull the drive shaft out of the trans? Black Snake 01-20-2006, 07:38 PM Also when you took the drie shaft out, and set it on the ground it might of been banged up and a U joint might lost a bearing. Just a theary, plus its always good to replace the ujoints when replacing gear. Its only 10 buck for one and only take 30 Minutes for a rookie to do it. I might be time to do it. stanglx2002 01-20-2006, 07:50 PM ORIGINAL: Tims 88GT yeah i have a slight vibration maby ill try that. should i pull the drive shaft out of the trans? dont pull it out of the tranny just pop it off the rear end and turn it while its in the tranny. Also a slight vibration might be that your front end needs to be realigned 50mikey 01-25-2006, 10:22 PM so im kind of confused...how do you spin it 90 degrees? it can only bolt to the rear end in two different places, and they are 180 degrees apart. Im asking this because I am having the same problem after my gear swap. It was vibrating really bad so i had the drivline balanced and he said it was way out of balance, put it back on and its better, but still vibrates pretty bad. I also had all the tires balanced, and its been aligned recently WesDe 01-26-2006, 01:08 AM Depending on what size og gears you have, you will have some vibration at high speed. That is the reason why gears like 4.10 and above are not recommended for long range high speed driving. The reason for that is that the higher the number the closer the teeth on the gears. If you are feeling a humming noise with slight vibration comming from your shift knob then it is the gears. At speeds over a 100 mph it is ok. If there is a shake then it is the driveshaft. If the humming is loud with a lot of vibration then your gears might have been installed incorrect. Spacing is very important. |
