Usually no, but if you buy the XCal-2 from a dealer who does dyno tuning and sells the CAI of your choice and the XCal2 you can usually get the canned house tune for that CAI or engine component. The off the shelf XCal2 is an empty glass, you need to fill it with a custom program either purchased over the internet or supplied by your local SCT dyno tune shop.

Diablo's marketing is the opposite, they have partnered with several, O.K., virtually ALL of different makers of engine related components that will need a custom tune. Steeda, Vortech, Paxton, C&L etc. and ALL of these products have dedicated Diablo Predator part numbers for that specific brand of power enhancing component and they ALL have a set of custom tunes for the product line on the label. For example I bought a Steeda CAI and Steeda Diablo Predator hand held tuner, it had a Steeda part number and has Streeda specific firmware and Steeda tunes for all of the Steeda products that need a custom tune. I got tunes for the Steeda 90mm MAF CAI kit with 87, 89 and 93 octane along with tunes for the Steeda CMCP and other tunes that allow you to adjust the factory program ignition and fuel calibrations. This version firmware is only good for Steeda equiped cars and is updated regularly. I recently updated my old, original Steeda CAI that shipped with an 85mm MAF housing to the latest 90mm MAF housing. To use the new larger 90mm MAF housing I had to update my Diablo tuner's firmware to the latest version. I downloaded and updated the tuner and flashed the car's ECU and it really made the car much more responsive and it was much sharper than stock with the original Steeda 85mm MAF tunes.

Hey...I just purchased a Cnl CAI with a diablosport tuner and I was just wondering what everyones preference on tuners are...cause it seem that alot of people have CNL CAI with a sct from brenspeed....just wondering if theres any major differences and if one make more overall horse power! PS I chose the diablosport tuner because on the official CnL site they recomended it! ......Cheers

Hi shuin,

DiabloSport and SCT have both taken very different marketing approaches form one another to differentiate themselves form one another. DiabloSport has firm tires to virtually all of the major engine bolt-on parts makers and provides tune for all of them. From CAI kits to superchargers DiabloSport has Predators with special part numbers with special firmware with tunes included for the particular product brand installed from the DiabloSport factory.

Until recently SCT has always taken a different route preferring instead to have customers buy an empty SCT XCAL tuner and then buy a tune from the SCT dealer of your choice. But because there are so many shops that bought into the SCT Advantage Tuning Program the market was now flooded with a zillion "custom" tuners even if they didn't have a dyno! So these dealers needed to differentiate themselves by creating value for their shop's brand. So once they were established and had a chance test out the stock tunes supplied by SCT in their Advantage tuning program they started to sell some popular items like CAI kits and suppling their or "custom" canned tunes for free as part of a bundled CAI/tuner package. SCT is not stupid and their marketing people need to make their sales goals so they came up with the Strategy Tuner from SCT. Basically this is a crippled XCAl with some pre-installed tunes for popular hop ups.

If you plan to use the canned tune the Diablo Predator is a fine choice because you know that the manufactures have built good solid tunes that will work well for most people. If you really plan to modify your car and then get a custom tune done on the dyno then I'd buy the tuner brand that your local car club members recommend. Hopefully their recommendation are based on good results and a relationship with the best local dyno tune shop in your area.

Both SCT or DiabloSport tuners work very well and both will give you the same power for a given engine combination assuming the people doing the dyno tune know the software equally well. There are a lot of DiabloSport Chip Master Revolution tuners put there. Most CMR dealers seem to prefer to have your car in the shop to do a custom dyno tune instead of throwing together a canned base tune from the CMR software value tables. Of course some DiabloSport tuners will supply a "tune" for your car over the INTERNET sight-unseen just as will many SCT dealers but I've found most DiabloSport CMR dealers prefer to work from a good base tune and improve it based on what the dyno and wideband A/F meter tells them.

There are also a lot of SCT Advantage III dealers out there, probably more than DiabloSport dealers. There are a lot of reasons I suppose from a business point of view why so many shops are selling and tuning using SCT's dealer package and handheld tuners. From my standpoint, the end result on the dyno, there is no difference in the real world. Most SCT dealers are happy to sell you a tune over the phone based on the values provided by SCT's tuning package making adjustments to the tune package based on the details of your listed mods. Many will also perform custom tuning on a dyno for you just as most DiabloSport dealers will.

It really boils down to where you are going with your engine mods and what level of money you are willing to throw at your car. Most people find themselves perfectly happy with the canned Diablo Predator tunes for the particular CAI kit they buy and most other bolt-on mods require no changes to the basic CAI tune to work very well in most conditions. Most of the SCT dealers also sell a CAI kit and will provide the house canned tune for that particular CAI kit.

Hi,

Most people would NOT agree if sales numbers are any indication of "best" CAI. "Best" means a lot of things to a lot of different people.

IMO "best" means effective power increase, reliable, supportable, repairable all at a reasonable price. For a CAI effective power means that it works and is capable of making as much power as the top tested units on the dyno with effective air filter sealing against the engine compartment hot air. What this means is that the power you get on the dyno will actually be better in the real world when driving because on the dyno the sealed systems are subject to the same heat as the unsealed CAI kits so basically they all look the same when tested on the chassis dyno. Like I said, in the real world with cool air available to the filter element the effectively sealed systems will perform better even though under chasis dyno testing conditions they all work the same.

Reliable means that the CAI is built of materials that will not delaminate or rust or melt under the long term high heat of the engine compartment. Reliable/repairable means that you can buy parts to repair the unit as time goes by. This means that the company must be stable and been in business for a long. long time, not some new "performance" company that comes and goes in 5-10 years.

A resonable price is determined by the level of design and construction quality and how well the CAI is supported. A well sealed air filter box and large MAF housing is important even to N/A motors and you should be willing to pay for this important advantage over a "CAI" that lacks an air filter box or fence to prevent hot engine compartment air from entering the filter element. The whole point of a Cold Air Intake is to get cold air to the intake filter element and blocking hot air from the filter element and producing more power.

Personally I like C&L's Racer CAI kit and Steeda's CAI kits. Both are effective and work well on the road and track. Both are effective and they are for all intents and purposes comperable products. Diablo and SCT hand held tuners are also comperable. Both are very good units and work well, which one you buy depends on where you are going and if the local Mustang shop uses SCT or Diablo software and programmers. They both do the same thing except that you get good factory quality canned tunes wih Diablo Predator tuners for what ever major CAI you buy. The Diablo tunes are very good, not as good as a custom dyno developed tune but pretty close.

The Diablo marketing plan is good for those who want to buy a good CAI (all of the good CAI's are supported by Diablo), install it and go. There is some small amount of power to be had from a custom tune but we're talking only a few horse power if my experiences are any indication. If every time you make a change to your engine that requires a re-tune you will be spending a whole lot of money if you like to install hop ups one at a time. With Diablo's CAI or supercharger specific tunes you are assured of getting good solid tunes out of the box with no need to custom tune for your car or depend on a local tuner to keep re-tuning your car.

SCT hand held tuners on the other hand depend heavily on their dealers to sell or include the "house" tune for any particular CAI they sell. These tunes are variable as many "tuners" do not actually develop their own tunes on a dyno but using values provided by the handheld tuner compamy just plug in data from tables in the dealer tuning packages. This stratagy is good for users who plan to pay for a true custom dyno developed tune for their particular vehicle engine combination.

I don't have an exact website for you to go to but ya know damn well that what you're looking for is indeed made but hard to find. Try summit because I saw them advertising an all chrome alternator for show.

SPEAKING OF SUMMIT. I WANT TO GET AN X-PIPE WITH HI-FLOW CATS. WILL THE SUMMIT BRAND BE OK? OR SHOULD I GO GOR BRAND NAME?

GT 350 striping
Mustang singnature vinyl
Visus Aluminim Rear window louver
C+L CAI with Excalibrator 2 tune....THANKS FRED AT EVOLUTION
Borla Exhaust system

well the tune and all done, it sounds great, runs strong, shifts allot better (Chirps 2nd and 3rd at WOT)
looking at adding a aftermarket throttle body......Granatelli, BBK, Loki???
a) is it worth it???
b) will I notice much more of a gain, or is pulleys the way to go now
c) if so, who makes the best throttle body......

will I need to get a new retune after the throtle body is installed???

any assistance would be appreciated
also looking at adding ram air hood, roushe wheels....(Local ford has a great deal on them with tires only 2K

Hey I'm looking to start doing all the basic mods for my 05 mustang GT (manual tranny) and I'm looking for a good place to get parts from. If there are any local performance shops near Houma, La. that anyone knows about that would help too. Blow By Racing seems to have some good deals. Any comments or advice or anything helpfull is greatly appreciated.

i have a 05 stang with c&l cai diablo tuner removed my stock mufflers made a fixture for them an made straight tailpipes for them looks totally stock had it in for service and both the service manager and mech asked why it sounded better than stock told them i couldnt tell them if they couldnt fig it out just had it in for warrenty work on door handle and strut bearings and he still asking me what i did i broke down and showed him tailpipes i made all he said was cool i work for a small aircraft exhaust business i am a fabricator 15 yrs of doing it when i first got my stang i knew id redo the tailpipes we use 321 stainless on aircraft exhaust which i used on my tailpipes which is better than the 304 stainless they use on the exhaust by any Manufacture that i have seen im also thinking about doing from headers back headers will be a test of my ability but hope i can get them to work good thing about making my own exhaust it cost me zero means more money to spend on other stuff lol

Greetings...I'm the proud new owner of an 07' GT and was admiring your new AEM Brute Force setup. I was curious to know your opinion on the S&B CAI? RPM outlet claims to have tested a variety of mods for our generation mustangs and concluded that S&B is the best bang for the buck in terms of HP. What do you think?...and how would it hold up stability-wise for the long run? I must say I'm really tempted to go with your CAI after from reading the thread you posted of the installation of your Brute Force. Let me know, and I'd appreciate any and all advice I could get on CAIs from anyone else as well...it's good to be a new member, and I'm floored by all the good advice I see flowing around out there in the forum...SwiftCat
