Obsol3te -> Wow light cars... (2/8/2004 9:32:44 PM)

was lookin on another forum posted by some1 in the racing section.  Was Honda-tech.com i think, well anyways i saw this post there of an 1800lb crx.  Are they all this light? Or did he have a lot of weight reduction and stuff...  I don't know much about cars really but how light could I get my 92 GT without costing too much.  I saw fiberglass doors on 5.0 resto along with a fiberglass hatch.  It didnt say the weight differance really, but it'd be nice to know.  Also, how much lighter is an Aluminum Block than an iron?  My car currently weighs like 3200lbs right? Blegh that'd be nice though.  Just getting a fartload of HP on an 1800lb car.  Now I see why SOME people "beef up" those cars.

Lots of questions I know, but I'm just a car-noob.

i heard people drilling holes throughout the frame to make them lighter. you can cut out 25lbs out of your doors by cutting out that impact plate inside your doors. get a k-member tubalar a-arms.alum heads...you know how much those freaken stock heads weigh? do you have power doors? i took all my a/c crap off that was 70lbs including my smog pump.

If you drive your Mustang on the street and plan to keep driving it on the street, then I wouldn't go drilling holes in the frame to reduce weight. That's structural man, and you don't want to be screwing with the structural rigidity of your car. Once the frame is tweaked, you're done, and you can kiss your car goodbye, unless you can afford the thousands of dollars to have the frame straightened. Some good ways to reduce weight are replacing all your glass with lighter weight materials like lexan, use fiberglass body panels, and if you really want to reduce frame weight, just invest in a tube chassis.

well, lets say i was sitting on a pile of cash(which im not)

how light can you get a 92 mustang without altering the frame?

yea i got power everything btw...

got rid of the AC, doors are heavy as f*** though.

i hear getting rid of the back seat frees up 50-75 lbs? something around that...

grabbem88 -> Wow light cars... (2/8/2004 10:25:45 PM)

who's gonna ride with ya? mine weighs 2900lbs now and i'm not about to touch the frame too dangerous too alter the integerty (you know what i mean) of my car.

Obsol3te -> Wow light cars... (2/8/2004 10:37:50 PM)

i will have to weigh mine i'm wondering want it weighs too.do you know what combo your going with yet????

NeoTokyo -> Wow light cars... (2/9/2004 3:44:03 AM)

Mine is 3077lbs.... There are rear seat deletes for our stangs Fox bodys and all and they look pretty nice too.

There are 4 body peices that you can change out for Carbon Fiber.

1.) Hood
2.) Trunk Lid
3.) RH Front Quarter
4.) LF Front Quarter

I dont know how much you are saving but its alot when compaired to Carbon or Fiber Glass. Then changing out your windows for the lightweight stuff will also cut lotsa weight. After that it starts getting hard to remove weight, from there on your pretty much sacrafising luxury and reliability/safty from this point.

i agree,safety first so what if a civic weighs 1000lbs less.i'll get on a diet before sacrificing structure...since i'm a fat a$$.

So yes, now you know why people do swaps into CRXs...the earlier models started out less than a ton...sub 2000 pound cars and 500 hp can do a s**t load of damage at the race track.

Obsol3te -> Wow light cars... (2/9/2004 11:04:22 AM)

hrm, well i didnt wanna go THAT far as into Carbon Fiber goes...

i DO however have a Fibererglass hood

screwit ill just get the HP first then do that after

Obsol3te -> Wow light cars... (2/9/2004 11:05:45 AM)

do they have RH/LH front quarter in Fiberglass?

i hear its just a little bit heavier but costs much less than carbon

plus u cant paint over carbon fiber can you?
