When i start my car in the cold there is a loud whine noise coming from the engine, and when i accelerate it gets even louder, it sorta like a Supercharger. Is the noise coming from the belt, which i think it is or somthin else?

And does anyone have an idea on how much it would cost to rebuild the posi?

Is you power steering pump low?

Status: offline the noise is the belt. we have a 96 explorer that does the same thing in the cold. you can live with it until it warms up, or replace the belt.

Status: offline Start the car cold and go under the hood and see if you can pinpoint the noise.The tensioner could be giving out and allowing the belt to slip.The tensioner pulley could be making the noise and when the lube in the bearings is warmed up it flows back and lubes the bearing and quiets down.For that matter it could be any one of the spinning things.You can isolate each one by using a wooden dowel or long bladed screwdriver as a stethoscope.Place one end on the suspect bearing and the other end on your ear.Normal noise is like a smooth...well..spinning sound.A rough sound is reason for a closer look.Just be careful around the moving belts or you could end up in the hospital.
