Default Is my Thermostat going bad?

Hey guys, I am 95% sure that it is my thermostat, but i just want to make absolutly sure before I change it.

I notticed when I was driving back from Napa last night that my Temp was kinda high, about 65-70% on the idiot guage, watching it I saw it drop all the way down to 40-45% on the guage, then i watched it slowly raise back up thengo back down.

Now I am pretty sure this is because of the thermostat sticking and not opening at the correct temperature that it is suppose to open at, then the temp gets so hot and the it opens up. Also I was wondering if it is a failsafe in the thermostats, that if they dont open that they open under so much pressure....

But otherwise I am 95% sure its the thermostat and I just want what you guys think to be 100% sure before I go through the trouble of changing it. And dont worry about telling me how to change it, i have changed many a thermostat on Chevys and Fords

Thanks guys

thermostats are designed to open when they go bad, to prevent over heating. ive never heard of one opening and closing like that

Neither have i.A failsafe is always a good idea though.I just use a mr.gasket 160 in mine and have no problems.

Hell if you arent sure yank it and replace it.Its only 7 bucks and about 15 minutes.

Tonight I bought a stock replacment ( 192 degree ) I was very surprised on how hot the damn thing opens, thats not that great for my engine concidering the heads are notorios to crack at high temperatures.... I think I should return it and look for a 160 one.... The lowest Autozone had was a 180 but it was almost $20 dollars......

a 180 is what you need.the 160 will most likely run in the closed loop on the '95 'puter.but damn 20.00 for a stat though..wow..

I'd be looking at a water pump and or belts also. Not to many thermos open and close like that, they either stick open or they stick closed. FYI.

Hmmm, well changing it fixed my prob, I just stuck the stock 192 degree in there and it works great now, the temp doesnt bob at all... But I do need new belts, I notticed a couple cracks in mine and thats bad as we all know. Generally I keep a spair set in the trunk just in case, but I havnt had this car that long and still need to do that, so when I go I need to buy two sets of each.

You know they do make restrictors that go in and arent a thermostat at all they just slow the flow down enough to allow it to cool and will out flow any stat out!You may want to look into them because of those heads be janky and warping.
