Hey everyone, wanna get some feedback on a car I just bought...

I just purchased a 67 convertible C Code. All orioginal, numbers matching engine, tranny (auto) and rear end. It has a 2 barrel and single exhaust. Body and top are mint, engine runs excellent, shifts smoothly etc. Interior needs work, it is tired, but in decent shape...anyways, part of me wants to restore it as original, and part of me wants to beef up the engine with new heads, cam, carb etc, but would also mean rear end replacement (to a 9 inch) and probably a new tranny. Am I better off keeping this a numbers matching car, or are they too plentiful for that to even be a big deal, value-wise? I like the car alot and I got a fair deal (12k)...I am torn between making it a meaner machine or keeping it original....any value in keeping it stock? Thanks!

Well, I believe you can restore anyway you want too. When i get the cash, im upgrading all the things you said. I already have a BAD stereo with 2 12 subwoofers in the back. There are alot of 67 289's and it wouldn't hurt the value of the car to supe it up. I also dont think you need to change out the rearend. As long as it is a V8 rear end, it should be able to handle the upgrades. IT handled the 289 Hipo i believe.

cool..thanks for the info on the rear end and advice. What about the tranny (auto) in this? If I beefed it up to 300-350HP with heads, CAM, exhaust and carb, would I need a new transmission?

Thanks!

Hmmm, Good question. I know you wouldn't need a new transmission, but maybe you should rebuild the current one, and put in stronger gears. You might need to buy a new stall convertor. I heard that it can tear them up.

C4 transmissions, like you have, have been run in 9 second drag cars with a few alterations. A stock type rebuild on one will last for a long time in an 11 second car. Fords dont really need shift kits, the old ones shift plenty hard as it is.

Are you planning on selling the car for profit or keeping it for a long time and enjoying it? If you plan to keep it, go ahead and upgrade the engine but keep the old heads, intake and manifolds. Stand the heads on end in a corner of the garage, and get something that flows better.

You could check the cylinders while its apart. It most likely has been rebuilt at least once. If it has a number stamped on the piston and you can run a fingernail from about an inch down the cylinder all the way to the top and it doesnt catch on any ridges, you can just throw some heads and a cam on it.

I would recomend these:
49-31-238-3 Xtreme Energy XE262H Hydraulic Flat Tappet Camshaft Only
Lift: .493''/.500''
Duration: 262°/270°
RPM Range: 1300-5600 is $99 from Jegs or Summit

Edelbrock
# 50-2121 Performer 289 Intake Manifold SB-Ford 260-289-302ci
# 4-bbl Square-Bore Carb Flange (non-EGR)
# Idle-5500 rpm
50-state legal

or
Weiand
925-8011 Idle-6000 rpm, Action Plus+, Lo-Profile

The difference in heads is the rocker arms you will use. I would use stud type, but you may not want to spend the extra $150-$200 on roller rockers at this point. So the choice is yours
# 033-1402 SB-Ford Outlaw Street Cylinder Head165cc Intake Ports
# Stud Rocker Arm Mounting
# 58cc Combustion Chambers
# 69cc Exhaust Ports
# 1.450'' Hydraulic Dual Valve Spring with dampner
# 120 lbs. Seat Pressure
# .550'' Max Lift
# Sold in Pairs $1,329.99

# 033-1472 SB-Ford Outlaw Street Cylinder Head165cc Intake Ports
# Pedestal Rocker Arm Mounting
# 60cc Combustion Chambers
# 69cc Exhaust Ports
# 1.450'' Hydraulic Dual Valve Spring with dam
# 120 lbs. Seat Pressure
# .550'' Max Lift
# Sold in Pairs $1,329.99

Just what I would do it I were to keep the 289 in my 67 Cougar. I think its getting a Cleveland or possibly an FE 390/428

thank you very much for the detailed reply and advice regarding the C4. Exactly what I wanted to hear....that's my style: Keep it stock looking, as close to #'s matching as possible, but kickin' HP under the hood
