answers for the 5.8 swap into
for fox body cars, the 351w is almost a bolt-in replacement for the production mustangs 5liter engine. the 5 liter and 5.8liter engine blocks share a common bellhousing bolt pattern and the same motor mount bracket provisions. the main considerations in this swap involve using a doublesump oil pan, specific engine mounts, a suitably contoured dipstick tube, a "trimline" power brake bosster, an appropriately balanced flywheel/flexplate, adequate hood clearance, and specific exhaust manifolding. [attempting to use a5 liter headers on a 5.8 results in interference problems, especially around the steering column.]
the mustang standard accesroy drive is readily adaptable to the [1971 adn later] taller deck 5.8liter v8 when modified bracketry, a longer belt, and athe proper crank pulley spacer [FRPP part number M-8510-c351] are employed. the standard powersteering and air conditioning pumps can be retained by suing the special FRPP mounting plate, part number M-8511-b351.
Pre-1986 mustangs and 1986-93 non-v8 mustangs also require a double hump transmission crossmember[FRPP part number M-5059-a] to provide clearance for a dual exhaust system. FRPP offers long tube headers for a 5.8 liter in 1979-95 stangs. part number M-9430-z3 covers 1 3/4 headersfor the 5.8 liter. depending on the configuration of the intake system used, the taller 5.8 liter assembly usually requires more hood clearance than a 5 liter assembly.
