I've been thinking about getting 4:10 gears, will it be hard to hook up off the line with them? Should I just go for the 3:73, or is the 4:10 a lot better?
I've got an automatic 98 v6... what gears came stock with it and what should i get to have the best acceleration. it's basically a daily commuter but i love to fly past people.
i just recently bought 3.73 gears for my 95 GT. the person i bought it from said the install was easy except torquing the yoke. i want to do this myself but i need help from pros out here. how are the crucial steps/precautions i should take when undergoing this task? how long will it take? or should i just get professional to do it?
It's do-able but you need some specialized tools, including a press, dial micrometer, inch pound torque wrench, and a monster torque wrench (for the yoke part you mentioned). I would recommend a shop do it; it runs around $200.
I just had 3.73s installed in my 01 GT. The car is running great except that the rear end is making a high pitched sound in certain RPM band widths. I called the shop that installed it and they said that this is normal, and that it will quiet down a little more miles I drive. Something to do with the parts fusing and setting in, and they had to shim to make the gears fit correctly.. The shop that did it is very good at what they do, but I am not sure if it should make this noise or not. What do you guys think?
would a gear change from a 2.73 to a 3.27 or 3.55 be a good first mod for a 98 v6....im gonna end up gettin CAI, new headers, intake, chip, etc but all in good time....just wanted maybe a basic order for moddin my 6 without messin somethin up
my 98 had 2.73 when i looked.....all u gotta do is look under the rear on that pumpkin lookin thing, lol, and theres a metal tag that should say what gear ratio u have
Well my brother brought his 96 GT in the shop because of a really bad gear whine. It had 82K miles and the lady never changed the rear end fluid so im guessing thats how it happened and the rear seal was leaking so the fluid was about half of what it should have been, anyway. The shop called back today and quoted...get this.... $900 for swapping out his 3.27's and putting 3.27's back in. I say if your paying that freaking much put some 3.73's or 4.10's in it and a new t-lock. I asked why it was so much and the guy said it cost $300 for them to test drive it and take a look at the rear end.!!!I did that in my driveway!! I just dont have the tools to put in a new ring and pinion. Just had to get that off my chest.

Hello everyone, I just want to ask how big of a difference going from 2.70's to say 4.10's would make. From what I hear it's like night and day, but I'm talking 1/4 time. My car is a 73 mach 1, with basically every bolt on (MSD box, dist., coil, K&N, edelbrock carb, flowmasters, and edelbrock intake manifold.) but the thing is such a dog off the line. I gtech'd it and it ran 16.8 with a bad start, and it was a hot, humid day (probably could run low 15's, but I cant check because my mounting bracket broke.) can someone please give me a (rough) estimate of what it could run with 4.10's, detroit locker (has open dif) and drag radials? thanks
Sean, Just got off the phone with my friend who owns a ford dealership here. He told me to install 3.55s, me supplying the gears, 490.00 for labor. He took that price from the Ford labor estimate book. He said it sounds a little high to him and would do it for Time and Material not to exceed 450.00.

Gee, I just had my 4.10's and T-Lok installed for $250.00..
The guy i bought my car from said he put in 4.11 gears, i think he said they are made by summit or ford racing. Is there such thing as 4.11 gear for a 95 5.0L 5spd ? It does get up and go, and the top speed isnt all that great, and the RPM's jump up really quick, so i do imagine that he told me the truth about smaller gears.

I bet he meant 4.10's. And it is true, you do lose some top end. But you do get there so much faster!
This whole gear change thing has me about nuts. I have 02 GT, lot of bolt on stuff already on it. This GT is manual.. thats my problem. Most guys I talked to say I would be disappointed with anything but 4:10s. This car is lucky to get 5000 miles a year and I don't race it, other than smokin some local ricers I see on the way to work. So with those facts, can I safely run 4;10S or go 373s. I did some pricing and I can buy ford racing ring & pinion and the kit with all the shims, gaskets race and bearings cheaper than Richmond, Jegs. Summit is cheaper. I would think using factory parts would be the the thing to do. Am I right?
Steve PS K&W transmission will install for 175 to 200. K&W is a 3rd Generation company here and have done work for me before.
