yes yopu proubally could. the 4.10 gears vfast will run you a little more. i would take it to a reputiable garage that wold let you watch them install the gears and then try one on you own later.
if you want to be absolutely sure what you have, look for the metal tag hanging from the rear on one of the housing bolts-write down all the numbers and letters exactly as they appear and take it to your local Ford parts man who can look it up and tell you exactly what rear and gears you have. this way you won't be guessing at all unless someone has already been in there and changed them. I would go with a posi-trak rear with 3.73 gears for the street as this is a happy medium between go fast acceleration and gas mileage. An AOD tranny with overdrive would probably be a better choice than the C-6 if this is primarily a street driven car as the overdrive really helps the engine run less rpms at highway speeds. You might want to consider swapping in an 8.8 rear for the strength and better axles, I raced my basically stock 5.0 motored '88 with 3.73's, an Auburn posi, and 26" x 9" slicks for several years and never had a problem with the 28 spline stock axles. hope you know that a 351W will probably require a cowl hood to provide clearance and that the front springs and brakes will be undersized for the weight of a V-8 versus the 4 banger you have now. good luck with the swap!
here's a question for everyone,..I acquired a 91GT Aod and noticed the rear was/hadbeen changed. It has discs but still it is a four lug rear, 3.55 ratio. I really didn't think that stangs came with discs until 94 which they also upgraded to 5-lug. My friends think this is a 93 Cobra rear end. Does anyone know whether or not rear disc brakes were available with 4-lug 93 or older set up?
there are 2 ways, there is an ID tag on every rear. that might be hard to read so hear is what i recomend to do,you need 2 people jack the back of your car up. put it in nutral with the e-brake off, block the one tire so that when you spin it they both spin in the same direction, get one of you buddies to craw underneath and watch the drive shaft, market in on the driveshaft and the rear with white out or something, then spin the tire one full rotation and count how many times the drive shaft turns. it won't be exact but it will be close this should give you some idea of ur gears. if you don't know what the ratio's mean like a 3.55 it means the drive shaft turns 3.55 revulutions for every one turn of the tire.

why not just look at the ID tag on the driver's door. What letter is there? I forget the codes offhand but I can find out if you tell me what the code is.

top end means you will have more power and torques in the upper rpm range and you will have more top end if you ever get the chance to top out your car. (unlikely) low end means you will have more grunt off the line.
