Alright...now this vehicle looks completly like a GT...gt wing, mouldings seats...the whole nine yards...and has SSP VIN. Now I've been told that technically my car can't be a GT because all SSP's were based off the LX. So here's where I'm searching for help, where do I go to do the research to find out the history of my vehicle in entirety. If my car really is a 86 SSP GT 5.0 then that would make it a bit unique and worth restoring to stock only.

You cannot tell an SSP based on the vin #. All Mustangs have what are called buck tags attached to the radiator support behind the driver headlight area.
No, that has nothing to do with it. All 86 SSP are coupes. They also have a certified 140mph speedo. It is possible that it could have been used by a police agency as many used cars they confiscated and whatnot.
Ok your 86 hatch was more than likley a Impounded or one they picked up in a raid and put in to duty stations do it all the time to cut back on cost. Ford only made about 15,000 SSP stangs from 82-93 and all but 5 were coupes the 5 hatch models that was made were 82 models . If you have any more qusetions about SSP stangs let me know and here is a site that you can check out to learn a little more http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_SSP_Mustang And another thing the DSO tag on the rad core support is the only way to ID a real SSP stang.

Another way to tell if it is a SSP is by the DSO on the door sticker..
The only "right" way to change a 79-86 over to a 87-93 is change ALL the moldings on the car plus the bumper covers. Alot of people do a lame job and just swap the covers. I myself like the 4-eye cars and think it is dumb to change them over...
Seal County California ordered 5 ssp hatch Mustangs a year from 86-89 as unmarked units. Many people were use to seeing the coupes that the hatch was a "stealthy" alternative. These cars were sold at state auction as a regular 5.0 hatch but do have the dso (buck tag) to id them. Most of these cars are now either wrecked or in collectors hands and obtaining one is damn near impossible. The only one I have personally seen was at a private collecton of fox mustangs in Charlotte NC. There was no way to tell driving by one of these that they were police units until you were pulled over ,imagine that.
