check out what one guy said

quote:

The other cool thing about this amp, is that it is basically a JBL amplifer in an Infinity case since they are both made by Harmon Kardon and Infinity makes speakers primarily. So you're getting a great amp, made by a company known for great amps, at a great price.

some1 got

I could honestly car less about what people on CIRCUIT CITY or CRUTCHFIELD website think - namely because they are all people like yourself. They don't know much about audio in general and must go looking for advice. Do you think people shopping for car audio at Circuit City actually have a clue?

The amp is garbage as far as I'm concerned. 1% THD is going to blow speakers faster than you can say "I don't know anything about car audio." The specs just plain suck, and the price of the amplifier backs up my argument. 111x4 for $300??

Like I said before, it is your stereo. If you are happy with those numbers, then buy the damn amp.

For the record, Infinity amps have POOR specs.

No they don't. They are a great amp. And they are tested to very tight specs and put through through all types of environmental tests. One thing about Infinity and JBL amps, is when they say they have 111Watts it is RMS and alot of the other amps use Peak to Peak.

So you are going to tell me that you think 81 db S/N ration and a whopping 1% THD qualifies as a "great amp?" You guys have seriously lost it.

I don't consider a S/N ration of below 81 dB "great." In fact, it is terrible. 1% THD - probably one of the worst 4 channel amps I've seen. I believe my last amp was 200x4 at .002% distortion and 115 dB.

The kicker there is the distrotion level...1% is HUGE. I would not recommend that amplifier...at all.

OK you 115 db Signal to Noise ratio means nothing without what power is was rated at.

It isn't 1% it is < 1%. Any THDN that is <1% is not audible to the ear.

so what amp was it? what rated power was it tested at for S/N level?

Bigwille, about the first problem. You say the speakers don't sound great? Did you install it? or did a professional? either way, I would check that the correct polarity on all the speakers were done right. If any of them are reversed, they will sound like crap.

It is COMPLETELY debatable whether or not the human ear can hear 1% or less THD.

The amp was rated at 100x4 @ 115 dB (4 ohms/channel).

So that 115 dB is the s/n ratio? what did they test that at?

@full power? 1watt power?

What brand amp was it?

It was one of the premier Powerclass amps of the time. Knockin on $1000, and it was still mediocore. I suppose I should quite arguing with non-SQ guys about what equipment they think they should be using.

Ok then you don't want to answer my question. FIRST of all I am a reliability lab engineer for car amps. I do know what I am talking about.

This is why I was asking you these questions. Most likely what most amp companies do is give you a s/n ratio tested at full power where as the Infinity system is tested at 1watt. SO we need to bring it to apples and apples.
what was the power of the amp? around 800 watts?
db= 10*log(800/1)
db = 29

115 - 29 = 86 db S/N ratio from a $1000 amp. You are getting 81db S/N ratio from a $300 amp. You definatly will not here a difference at all with 5 db above.

i got the speakers and a pioneer headunit pro installed at circut city. I went back the other day and i told him that the speakers were sounding "raspy" or "distorted" when i try to crank it. he said that its underpowered and i need an amp... i posted here and an engineer (you) gave a thumbs up on the amp........ case closed. ebay store is giving me the amp+3 year warranty+install kit for $300

everything else is warrantied at circuit city so i can blow em and get the new model as many times as i want

First and foremost, you are making assumptions at this point.

LOL. You're a silly boy.

What evidence does he have that those ratings are at full power? He's making assumptions that are going to benefit his argument. I will be the first to admit I was "assuming" we were speaking on a level playing field, in that each company practiced equal QA. All I can do is "assume" (yet again) that specs posted on a particular site will be of equal weight. I cannot attempt to guess at PPI's tactics, thus I cannot refute his statement, much like he cannot make said statement with 100% validity.
