So I was crusin down the highway today and I came upon a Civic. It was white, no ghey ass body kits or anything stupid. Plain ol' Civic. I decided to give him a try even though I pretty much knew my top end couldn't hold against his (we were goin prolly 60 - 65ish). I downshifted to 4th and hit it after he took off. He held me by a couple car lengths for a while before he let off. I ended up in 5th going close to a hundred. We were back and forth for a couple miles until we hit the bridge.

He gets in the EZ Pass lane and I keep going straight (EZ pass if you didn't know is where you just drive through instead of just paying a toll). I get stuck behind a line of traffic, while he passes through. I looked over and a Vette (prolly 1998ish - Convertible) honked at me and gave me a "I'll take care of him" kind of notion with his hand. They both slowed down to pass through the sensors and then took off. The vette had an easy 6 lengths on him before he gave up and the civic flew past. They were both screamin down the lanes, but of course the American muscle won.

I think the Civic might have been turbo, judging by the pillar pods (might have had a boost gauge). I though I heard it too, but I'm not sure because I wasn't paying alot of attention (and music was loud).

Either way, thought I'd share. That Vette stomped him.

This may come out the wrong way, but that Civic better of had a lot more than a turbo if you were in a 5.0 Mustang but then who the heck downshifts to 4th at 60 and expects to beat anything but the UPS truck??? In 5th before 100?!?!? Were you trying to insure a loss? Did I read the signature right, you are in some kind of V8 Mustang???

If not please let us know what car you were in, maybe I need glasses or something, if you were in something like a stock Civic yourself or something forgive me, if you were in a 5.0 or newer Mustang please stop racing, for every Mustang owners sake because that Vette should have been the race you were in and it should have at least been close. Downshift to 4th at 60, ugh.

Oh for the love of God... lol

So a civic with a turbo can't be in the 13s? Hell you better tell that to the guys with bolt on N/A D series SOHC vtecs running 13s.

What do you have? A stock GT with stock 3.27s? Is that why you think his shift points are off? 3.73s are going to make a giant difference in shift points and patterns.

Yea. I didn't completely wind out 4th because I wasn't planning on going for too long. There wasn't much room for a 100+ mph race considering there was traffic.

I'm not really trying to get anymore points on my license. That, and I've been driving a 5 speed for a month. Gimme a break.

Not only that, but I think a Civic pulls a little harder around 65 than my V8. I knew this before I even tried too. Remember, my fox is stock.

I had a foxbody with 3.73's, and my 4th gear went to 120mph, so he was in 5th gear way too early.

I thought Mustangs had their powerband in the lower RPMs anyway? After all... torque wins races, right?

Ummmm i dont get it. If you were RACING you should be in the lowest gear possible, i never said you had to go to 140mph.....

It's true. A civic with a turbo B series and a 4.4 final drive pulls pretty hard in second and third gear. 2nd goes from 40-60, 3rd goes from 60-80. Those are my two favorite gears.

i guess so but it's still a joke. "downshifted to 4th at 60mph" ??? wtf, i'm in 2nd gear t'ill 70mph and then third to 105mph, fourth is good for 105 to 140 ...5th is for saving gas. i have stock gears though but still, with 3.73s if the civic was 2-3 cars ahead all the way it makes no sense.

Hey guys c'mon cut jagezz some slack... he is right 5th gear on the freeway at +/- 65mph the 'stang wont pull for crap! In 5th (fifth)!!!!!!!!!!! Please drop to 3rd (in my car at 60 in a race, from a dig, Id still be in 2nd but id probably just downshift to 3rd, if already rolling 60+)

Jagezz granted your 3.73s and my 3.27s are a bit different but not much in 3rd my 5.0l pulls all the way to 105 to 110 mph. 4th as far as racing is concerned is too fast in your power band, in mine over 137 (I assume you only race on the freeway where you dont need a 130 + mph ticket) or to slow to accelerate, if you're between 1500 to 3000 rpm while racing you should be a gear lower if not two. And please reach your peak HP before shifting especially if your losing a race to a civic. Normally I shift between 2500 and 3000 rpm but if I am racing Ill take it up to 5000 rpm and if Im losing ill go right to 5300rpm.

okay not to offend anyone(2000si) but most civics will not pull past you at 60 unless you let them (some can, these owners have worked very hard for these bragging rights, but on average know that a civic does not pull harder than a mustang without mods at any speed.) Mods for a civic need to be better than a CAI and exhaust to beat a stang. and if you really think your racing a 13 second or better civic dont give him extra help buy driving in the wrong gear, hes worked hard to build a 'fast' car make him earn his wi!

Being in 5th or 4th gear at 60 does not give you mechanical advantage enough to accelerate fast. To observe this feel around with the car from 1000 rpm it is really slow to get to 2000(try it in 3,4,or 5th.) 2000 to 3000 is quicker but not much (in those higher gears) above 3000, 4000 comes pretty fast and from 4000 to 5000 should be a snap 3rd is especially good for observeing this since 4th at 5000 rpm is faster than you want to go and in fifth your car will have a hard time reaching 5000 rpm.

BTW even in a Vette you need the best gear for the speed you're going. 5th at 60 mph would get beat buy a Civic. Important rule the lower the gear the faster the acceleration.

Sounds like the kid had either a low boost turbo D16... a Turbo B-series the SI would of pull much more then just 6 cars.

I'me sure there are plenty of Civic's running 13's and I'm happy for them, really, I am. I really don't care about them however, in my humble opinion Civic's are for going to the store to buy milk, nothing more, I'm not in a Civic forum either so if people really love that car I'm sure they can head over there and talk about how much money they threw at their car which at the end of the day is still a Civic.

What I do care about is a guy who is driving a V8 Mustang who decides that 4th gear is the correct gear in a 3.73 geared car, then comes here to tell the story. I have had more than my share of Mustang's with that gear and believe me when I tell you 4th is the last gear for a race at 60mph. A Mustang with 3.73's doesn't get shifted into 4th at 60mph for anything but a lazy pass, if you want to race ANYTHING you drop to the lowest gear that can provide the most performance, maybe in a Civic this would be 4th, in a Mustang the best would be 3rd, a few mph less and it's 2nd.

Shifting to 5th at 100mph is almost as silly as going for 4th at 60, if you plan on racing this way plan on losing to Chevy S10's, Ford Pinto's and anything else who might be going by.

Now if my post offends those who have a Civic, I'm sorry....Kinda, I just don't get the guys who buy these cars, install wings, huge coffee cans and sound like their going fro broke just to make it to 30mph. Maybe I'm too old to get it, this is possible. I'm sure your Civic is nice and all so good luck with it.

Wow. I've only been driving a 5 speed for a month. Gimme a break.

That's also about as long as I've had the car.
