I'm not sure how you figure it would be as fast as the present Viper. R&T had it on the cover this month and had info dir4ect from Ford, and Shelby himself. Based on that, I would expect about 12.2 for a stock GT500 coupe, 12.4 for the vert:
Power: The recent cover article in R&T gave it as 475 HP. The Viper has 505.
Weight: the same article quotes "est 4000" for the convertible believeable, partly because the 5.4 with the SC is heavier than a 4.6),
but assume R&T is 5% over actual, then thats 3850 for the convertible and maybe 3700-3650 for the coupe. the viper is around 3400-3500, not light, but noticeably lighter than the GT500.
Rear tires: the Viper has 345s, R&T lists the planned tires on the GT500 as 285s. I would assume someone would have sense to fit at least 295s, but its needs something more than that.

....
Alright guys hopefully I can shed some light and some opinions on the GT 500. I found a dealerhsip in central FL back in March of '05 and put down a $5000.00 deposit to be # 1 on the list there for probably 1 of 3 GT 500's allotted per dealership (some will get more based on size of dealership). As a side note some dealers won't even/didn't even take deposits telling me straight up that the "GM and his buddies would get that car". The rep where my deposit is emailed me in late Nov to tell me the order date would probably be late Dec - Jan. He told me that they had a bunch of dealers had a meeting and Tampa/Orlando area dealers (my dealer is in a much smaller town, luckily) said they are looking to get $15-20k over sticker. My rep assured me no more than $10k.

I was stoked about this car due to all the hype and never owning a new car before. I was actually getting my hands on a Shelby I thought. Well I also own '98 Cobra which is near mint and I bought it one year used with 1900 miles on it letting the first owner take the hit. Talk about exclusivity, you SVT guys know that in '98 they only made 4005 coupes and 1000 converts. Much more rare. The productionof GT 500's is expected at 10,000 units! Then I read 5.0 Mustang and Super Fords Mag and they said it best: "..this car could just as easily and a lot less confusingly be named the '07 Mustang Cobra, because that's what it is, the next Mustang Cobra". They probably didn't mean it to be condescending but I took it as such and as I read the article I realized why.

1) The pics of the GT 500 that we've all seen are prototypes just like the bad ass pics of the '05 mustang from the auto show. They already started cutting out the toys with what most of you stated, the removal of the originally intended Lysholm twin-screw SC (supposedly due to Lysholm not being able to meet productin demands) and replaced it with the M1.22 Eaton. Pics you have seen of the blower on the Prototype are of the Lysholm.

2) They cut out the 19" wheels and replaced them with 18"s.

3) Spy pics I have seen show the GT 500 with the same rear bumper as the GT, and not the GT 500 specific one with the air diffuser.

I am sure there will be other changes as well. I agree with all of you about the power output and don't dispute this care will be a performer. But I also hear what you guys are saying that it would be more cost effective to hop up a GT. My arguement to all that was "but it's a Shelby" but I am not so convinced anymore. If this was a one year production I would be thrilled and eat the premium. But I fear this car will just get lost in the Mustang shuffle. Ford says that $50,000.00 is too much for a Mustang that's why they are making it affordable.

To some of you I may sound like a spoiled brat, but I am single and ready to buy a brand new car for the first time since '99. I wanted exclusivity not another Mustang that I am going to pay $10,00 over sticker for on only to have it get confused with a run of the mill V6. I wanted a car that would get noticed and not just by us gear heads As a staunch Ford buyer and on my third 'Stang I am starting to look toward the 911 Carrera or a BMW 645. My buddy says that now I am just ready to step up to higher end cars and that's why I grumble about the Shelby. Maybe he is right.

Bash me or agree, I want to hear what you guys think!

I agree with that you're saying... I want a car that's gonna stand out, so I don't want the cool stuff stripped off what we were introduced to in the Cobra's prototype in the very beginning. So Murph, do you still want the Shelby or not? "C"

When you get more details, will you PLEASE keep me posted? I'm currently "in-line" and "on-the-list" at three different dealerships, but I fear none of them are gonna favorably pan-out for me. "C"

No prob "C" I will keep you and thed others here posted. Furthermore on this I hope I can get it without the rocker stripe. Am I the only one who thinks it is ridiculously high up on the door? If it was much lower like on the bottom of the side skirt it would maybe look okay.

I have found an importer here in England who is advertising the GT500 for sale but only in red! I am awaiting a reply from him with regards to an 'on the road' price, i'm assuming he has his name down on a list somewhere and is sat with fingers crossed hoping to get his hands on one maybe two!

GT500 - approx 475bhp using 5.4 V8 block price $40k+ (no price set but could be upto $60k with greedy dealers)

Saleen S281sc - 425bhp using 4,6 V8 block, price $52k-$60k depending on extras

from reading as much as possible about the two as im looking to buy the saleen also, the saleen has higher spec brakes, suspension, interior etc
(waits for backlash on my comments!)

I WISH THEY WOULD ONLY MARK THEM UP TO $50K!!! I HAVE CONTACTED DEAERS IN 5 DIFFERENT STATES ANHD IT LOOKS LIKE THE PRICES COULD BE AS MUCH AS $80K OR MORE!!!!! THE RUMOR NOW IS EVERY DEALER, NOT JUST SVT DEALERS WILL GET ONE. THEY ARE GOING TO AUCTION THEM THIS WON'T BE AS BAD AS THE FORD GT BUT CLOSE.

FORD, THEMSELVES ARE CONTRBUTING TO THE HYPE AS THEY ARE GOING TO AUCTION THE RIGHTS TO THE FIRST GT500 THIS WEEK AT BARRETT JACKSON. LOOK FOR THE PIRCE PAISD THERE TO SET THE MARKET

NO WONDER FORD IS ABOUT TO GO BANKRUPT!!! FORD WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THE CAR FOR THE MASSES AND THE MUSTANG WAS SUPPOSED TO BE AN AFFORDABLE MUSCLE CAR WHEN IT WAS ANNOUNCED IN 1964. I HAVE A 66 AND A 94 COBRA PACE CAR NOW AND HAVE HA MANY OTHER FORDS AND MUSTANGS OVER THE YEARS BUT AFTER THIS, I AM DONE WITH FORD. wHO ARE THEY KIDDING. THE CAR IS HARDLY WOTH THE $40K ON THE STICKER. THEY ARE GOING TO SELL THEM FOR MORE MONEY THAN A CORVETTE!!!!

I AM GOING TO WRITE A STRONG LETTER TO BILL FORD. NOT THAT IT WILL DO ANYTHING BUT THIS EX LOYAL MUSTANG DRIVER IS GOING TO BUY A CORVETTE AND POCKET THE CHANGE!!!!

Well ..... The General is actually in much worse shape then Ford has been in for awhile.

FORD WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THE CAR FOR THE MASSES AND THE MUSTANG WAS SUPPOSED TO BE AN AFFORDABLE MUSCLE CAR WHEN IT WAS ANNOUNCED IN 1964.

The Ford Mustang GT "IS" a very affordable muscle car ( List a car with the 05's HP and great handeling for under $30,000.)

If you think that a car pushing close to 500 HP with a sticker price of "ONLY" $40,000 is hardley worth the money, well then my friend, I would have to say you know very little about cars and further more, a vette goes for over $80,000, Im not really sure where you are getting you figures from, but, I have a feeling you really just dont know what you are talking about.

Now, I am not really excitied that i will have to pay a mark up on the GT500, but I am looking at this as an investment. My opinion is you can not go wrong on this car and I hope that not to many people will agree with me on that. However, for any of you that are car collectors on this board, I know you feel the same way, for the rest of you that are flip floping, you just dont understand the magnitude of this car and frankly will be happier with the GT.

Well for what it's worth last year at the EAA oshkosh airshow ( I work there as an EAA volunteer(15 years) I met and spoke to Carroll Shelby and Edsall Ford while standing in front of the new Shelby Mustang. Both Carroll and Edsall autgraphed my specail FORD EAA ball cap with two P-51 Mustangs on the side of the bill and the FORD emblem on the front of the ball cap. Carroll and Edsall both said the new Shelby Mustang wil stay at or under $40, 000 MSRP.
FORD is one of the major sponsors of the EAA airshow. Also on dsiplay was the "Shelby Concept car", and a FORD GT 40.
Also a 2005 Ford Mustang. Ford also had a number of it's vehicles on the airport being used as VIP cars and courtesy cars.

Well firefox, I watched that Shelby Mustang race an airplane on the runway at the EAA Oshkosh airshow last summer.
It comes off the line in a MOST IMPRESSIVE FASHION, and ACCELERATES like GREASED LIGHTNING!!!
SEEING IS BELIEVING!!!
And that deep throaty roar from the exhaust and a huge smoke trail behind the car, and it definetly was burned rubber!
Not bad for $40,000 and 500 horsepower!

Speaking of Shelby Mustangs,
This happens to be my favorite hat, signed by Edsall Ford and carroll Shelby at oshkosh Wisconsin Air Show this past sumnmer.
The two P51's on the bill denote the second year Ford Motor Company has sponsored the EAA air show.
I don't know if it will make my new 2006 Mustang go faster, but it sure will look cool setting on the dashboard!

The price for a GT500 Shelby Cobra SVT 2007 is MSRP 39,995 according to Car and Drive magazine, which has been pretty accurate on their pricing

Wishful thinking!! MSRP $39,995 yes....asking price??? totally different. I really wanted one too but now I'm not so sure....who knows what will happen when the public can actually get their hands on one. Instead of the GT500 I'm starting to think a fully loaded GT with hefty mods might be the way to go. It's all so confusing at this point: with a lot of speculation. Any suggestions? And I don't think a Saleen is in my price range at this point either!

Look, according to Road and Track its going to have about 475 HP. That is good, but really, for the money, you can probably do better. the sticker will be close to $40-$45K, and for that, buy a standard GT and spend money on the mods you want. The GT 500 is not going to be the fastest car on the street with that power -- the 505 HP ZO6 is lighter and easily does 11.7s. i think it will take 550 in a Mustang, with its weight, to beat that, but you CAN get that if you buy a GT and select your aftermarket mods with some smarts.

but just wait a few months after its debut, there will be a kenne-belle blown gt500 eating z06s for thousands less! you could make a 700 hp gt500 and still have money left over to buy a 2006 v6 mustang before you equal the price of the Z06
