12.2 is a fair guess for the car. I didn't say it would be as fast, I said it would be close. A viper will run high 11s so you figure once the markup is gone the GT500 will be half the price of the viper and at worse case only a half a second slower.

It will be a bargain, and with the blower and all easy to modify for more power. But of course, its about a year or more from production. By then I guess the Viper will have 550-564 HP. they have to do something. The ZO6 is faster (and cheaper). What they need to do is put it on a diet and lose 300-350 lbs, but that is REALLYU expensive to do. Upping compression, porting it a bit, that's a lot cheaper, and of course Hennessey has proven you can get a ot more power out of that motor. I'm guessing 565 within a year, 550 won't be enough. .

At least the gt500 has back seats! and a z06 is closer to $81K with the dealer mark up! that's close to double the price!

I guess that dollar for dollar it will be hard to beat the performance of the new GT500 even with the dealer markup. $40,000+ for a Mustang that will keep up with z06's and vipers and absolutely spank them with a little mod(pulley, exhaust, etc) isn't really that bad. I guess I just never thought I'd see the day when an 05 GT with nothing more than stripes would cost as much as an 03 Cobra when they first came out and now the GT500 is going to be even further out of the average joe's price range.

i cant see spending that much for a gt w/ a stripe and a bigger engine. Id rather have an older viper

Me either. Look at the 65-70 Shelby's. Just Mustangs with stripes and some engine work that are worth nothing more than any other 65-70 Mustang these days...

wrong. shelby's now a days are worth WAY more than regular 65-70 mustangs. you wana buy a really nice 67 gt500, better have at least 150k.

Dude, I was being facetious... that is the reason for the .

Yeah, things to consider. I bought my Porsche Carrera over several other choices I was looking at just because I wanted to have a back seat, even if no one will ever ride back there.

The new ZO6 is a different car entirely than the GT500 (so is the Vioper for that matter) pure sports car, no back seat and all.

The GT500 will be a great car, can't wait to see one.

Yeah the GT500 is not in the same class as a Viper or a vette. I would love to have one though. Maybe after the markup goes away I will consider getting one.

Yeah, I was thinking of getting like a 2008 or 2009 model year. I will never get ahold of a 2007. I don't want to pay 60k for a Mustang anyway. I will pay the 40k.

Remember, Ford has stated that they WILL build a limited edition 2008 commemorative Bullitt edition in 2008, on the 40th anniversary of the Steve Mcqueen movie (still the greatest car chase ever caught on film). That might be a car to try to get instead.

This was reported in the Motor Trend earlier this year, the issue that had a charger and a green mustang on the cover - turns out MT had that Mustang custom painted for the cover. Ford doesn't make a dark green car and won't until '08.

In the article they reported that Ford told them the dark (essentially, british racing) green color will not be avialble 'til 08and that the model will have special features and have a bit more power than the standard GT when it comes out. That might be a very good car to get and it will probably cost less than a GT500 (I predict all will go for much more than list-like the Ford GTs).

I'm not sure how you figure it would be as fast as the present Viper. R&T had it on the cover this month and had info dir4ect from Ford, and Shelby himself. Based on that, I would expect about 12.2 for a stock GT500 coupe, 12.4 for the vert:
Power: The recent cover article in R&T gave it as 475 HP. The Viper has 505.
Weight: the same article quotes "est 4000" for the convertible believeable, partly because the 5.4 with the SC is heavier than a 4.6),
but assume R&T is 5% over actual, then thats 3850 for the convertible and maybe 3700-3650 for the coupe. the viper is around 3400-3500, not light, but noticeably lighter than the GT500.
Rear tires: the Viper has 345s, R&T lists the planned tires on the GT500 as 285s. I would assume someone would have sense to fit at least 295s, but its needs something more than that.

The most recent issue of 5.0M&SF got to test the GT500, SVT actually told them the car wieghed in at about 3,850 pounds with nothing in it. It was said to be about 300 pounds heavier than the current GT. With ten gallons of gas and a person it would be over 4,100 pounds or so. That is simply retarded. I would never want to own a 4,000+ pound performance car. I know it comes with the ability to make great power, but the wieght will always be a huge hinderance.

Yeah, for some reason alot of the special Mustang models seen really heavy. I drove a 2003 Cobra (the one with the SC) and was really surprised at how heavy it felt. Good power though.

I know they new Bugatti Vehron 16.4 is over 4000 lbs, but you know, I sort of figure a 16 cylinder quad-turbo engine has a reason to be heavy, and the 1000 HP (okay, actually 997 in the US version) sort of makes it okay (0-60 in 2.5 sec!). But even there, test drivers write about how how it feels. Its hard to understand why Ford doesn't put its special Mustangs on a diet (or all of them).

I think performance cars are best at around 3000 lbs - heavy enough to be strong and have a big engine: I drove a new Lotus recently, fast, but it FEELS flimsy and light because it is, on the otherhand it gets Corvette acceleratyion out of a toyota 4, its so light.

Thus, I've stuck with my Prosche 993 rather than a newer model because it weighs just slightly less than 3000 lbs so it does already on 237 RWHP, and my Mustang weighs in at right on 2900 lbs, and both feels about right.

Three thousand pounds is a good weight for a car, but with all the modern safety beams and everything, its hard to put much into a car and keep in under that. Your '68 has none of that stuff, and yet uses no modern aluminum or weight saving laminate metal sheet, etc., and yet it still weighs less than 3k, point being all the modern requirements probably add 300+ lbs. I personnaly feel 3200 lbs is a reasonable limit today.

And I agree the Mustang Cobra was heavy. Ford obviously can build light cars (Ford GT), but Cobra had that iron block -- don't know what that adds in a Ford, but in a LS1-6, iron weighs 90 lbs more, and then the engine itself is not light to begin with, and then the IRS. Still 3800 lbs dry seems about 200 more than I would expect.

I will probably start a big argument (remember everyone, I'm a GM guy at heart so don't beat me up for this!) but I suspect the SC'd Cobra "390 HP" engine actually puts out more HP than the 400 HP Chevy LS2 in the C6: not a lot more but maybe 10-20 RWHP. The Cobra was just too fast for only 390 HP. But again it is a heavy engine, with the big heads it used, and the SC, and the iron block, it probably weighed more than 200 pounds more than an LS-2 -- that is an amazingly light engine for a 6-liter V8.
