Default Appearance Rant

Wrote this in response to another post, but wanted to 'get it out there':

Call me a purist, a simplton or just a 32 year old 'old fart', but I personally think that adding a great deal of non-performance-enhancing mods (exterior appearance kits, etc.) is cheesy. I think it 'cheapens' the car's appearance... making it out to be something its not. It's VERY RICER to add a bunch of appearace stuff.

Too much show for the same go.

Keep it simple & original for the most part... as far as looks go. All I can think of are those freaks with neon lights under the car, huge spoilers, sitting (laying down) in their cars, etc. etc. etc. The mustang is an American car with PROUD, DECADES-LONG HERITAGE. Deviating from that heritage is sacrilege... and, once again, very RICER.

Ricers mod their car's appearance because their cars are generally UGLY and have NO heritage. Your 05/06 Mustang is gorgeous... straight from the factory. Especially due to the 'retro' styling, the appearance mods are that much more 'ridiculous' to consider.

I'm ranting, but why slap on a ton of cheap (not in actual cost, but in production expense) plastic that was NEVER MEANT to be on such a classy car? Hence the term "cheapen".

Appearance mods that are "acceptable", in my humble opinion: chrome exhaust tips and tires (not wheels/rims)... of course, if it'll help you MOVE faster and HANDLE better, than go for it. Otherwise, don't be a RICER.

Your car's gonna be a CLASSIC someday, so long as the junk stays off it. Otherwise it'll look like a Tijuana Hooptie (I live in SOCAL and see these all the time).

If you want further recognition, keep your car immaculate and spotless. Let the shine off of the paint and its factory-produced stunning looks and awesome exhaust note do the rest.

If you need more attention than what this awesome car gives, talk to a psychologist; mommy & daddy may not have paid enough attention to you when you were younger. Seriously. Cool is subtle confidence, not something that SHOUTS "Look at me"... that's a VERY immature stance to take.

To be even more blunt, when I'm driving my stock 06 GT and I see another mustang, regardless of year, all "Riced" out, I'm embarrassed... muscle cars (your Mustang GT) are just that: Muscle cars (harken to the 60's/70s). Not "fast and furious" piss-rods/fart cars, etc.

Keep it stock and do the rest of us Mustang owners a favor by saving us the eyesore.

OH

I'm guilty!

But at least the appearance mods I am doing are the same I would have done in 1969 if I had a new mustang back then!

I've read about your car and you've given me advice... your car isn't performance stock and I'm sure the hood, if functional, helps. Your grill isn't bad... I'm talking about the ground effects, large wing spoilers... stuff totally out of place on an American muscle car. You know... the typical Ricer stuff.

I'm going to have to disagree with you there. Now I'm all for performance mods, but there's a very important reason for changing the way your car looks. You're making it YOUR car instead of just A car that you own. Sure, people make some "questionable" design choices, but that's their choice to make. You like the looks of your stock GT and that's great, but hey if someone else wants to cover it in decals, add neon lights, some leopard seats & giant shiny gold plated wheels that spin and light up, well more power to em! It's not my style, but it's not my car.

Well that's a very warm, fuzzy and "let's all get along-type" statement. I know that may be your opinion, but its rather weakly-backed up with thought. No offense meant.

The fact of the matter is that such heavily modified vehicles look ridiculous...

Yes, that's my opinion too, but I BACKED-IT-UP, referencing the heritage of the Mustang, etc. Just because someone has a certain "taste" doesn't mean its RIGHT to follow through on it. Certain people like to cut-off the heads of non-muslims... that's their preference, but that doesn't make it right! Extreme example? Yes. Here's a lesser one: Someone likes to swear in public in front of ladies and kids. Is it right to do that? OR does it somehow offend you, because traditionally, this type of action is not acceptable?!?! The later example aptly applies to the "Mustang riceIFYERS". Is it legal to do it and can it be done? Yes. Does it seem right to the general public (or typical Mustang enthusist)? No.

I'm not proposing a law to ban it; don't get me wrong...

I just see "those" cars and think to myself: "What a moron". Kind of like personalizing an original masterpiece (i.e.: a Renoit or Van Gogh)... just doesn't make sense.

If you want a RICE-LOOKING car, buy a Mitsubishi, Subaru, Honda, etc. and go for it. Those cars can't be more visually ruined, for the most part.

Well looking at it from a Mustang puriest angle...why bother to make a V6? Isn't the heritage mainly V8?

Helps in performance, though... does it not? I'm referencing VISUAL ONLY MODS... HUGE spoilers, etc.

Not quite... many Mustangs have had V6s. My post never referenced/distinguished between 6/8 cylinders. I can't see buying a 6 cylinder stang, but I can see why some would (purely asthetics, vs. asthetics & performance).

This reply really doesn't have anything to do with ricer appearance mods, though.
