My name is Kris and I'm new here. I just thought I would pop in and say hello! I've got a 2001 v6. There's a 2001 GT with 12,000 miles on it for 17,500 at a local dealer here in Jersey and I was thinking about financing it. Is that a good price or should I negotiate? The salesman on the phone said his boss probably wants to move the car since it's off-season (snowy as heck here in jersey this time of year, not really ideal for a mustang). Are there any particular questions I should ask?

Thanks in advance!

i know what you mean about the snow . of coarse you should nagotiate. but i would get it even if he doesnt change the price if u can afford it. you need a V8!!

Hehe. I don't know how to drive stick, so that's why I'm in search of another car. I'd rather get another Mustang than some honda or jetta. :)

come on man, you gotta learn, I learned the hard way, by myself......regarding that GT, go ahead and try to get the price a little lower, is agood price though, but as the dumbass salesman told you, they are desperate, you have the advantage, and please, dont be a sissy like that hang10 guy, get a 5 or 6 speed manual........

Heh heh. This may warrant a "go read the book" answer, but I'm curious - what is the difference between the speeds? I keep seeing different speeds and I'm not sure what they refer to. How fast the car can go? Also, this car is a 5-speed manual.

the number of speeds is the number of foreward gears in the tranny it has nothing to do with the speed of the car. the only differance is that a 4-speed is usually a 5-speed without overdrive. a six speed just has closer ratio gears so there are more of them to get up to the top gear (which is just about the same as the top gear of a 5-speed).

and if you lived closeby to me i would teach you, but you dont. if you pm me i will try to explain it so that you could at least get going with it

Hey guys,

I saw the used GT and wasn't impressed honestly. It wasn't in great condition. I've begun to think about trading in my 2001 v6 for a 2004 GT and just paying the extra bit more. One thing though to keep in mind is I've *never* driven stick nor do I know anything about it. My worry is that a) I won't enjoy it and will regret the purchase for whatever reason, b) I won't be able to drive stick well, c) I'll bang up a brang new beautiful stang learning stick on it (either transmission-wise or body-wise). What would you all suggest in this case? Go for the 2004, or just hang tight with the v6? v6 has 46K miles on it. I'm really debating here as I want the GT, but I'm just worried about major regrets later. By the way, thanks to all for the advice and generousity (person who offered to help me learn).

Kindest regards,

Kris

46K is pretty low miles. Maybe just get some new chrome wheels, like 18" or bigger and it will seem like a new car. New chrome wheels have that effect on a car.

Hey guys,

I couldn't resist. I went ahead and went with an '04 GT. Within a few days I should know what my approved APR is and we'll see how it goes from there. Friends tried to convince me to get the 350Z, or an older Firebird, but I love the stang too much. So trading in the '01 v6 for an '04 v8 (with some financing). Drove in one today with one of the salesman and man, I just couldn't get over the growl, especially in comparison to my v6. Beautiful doesn't begin to describe it. I'll keep you all updated!

You all rock. Thanks for the feedback. One last tiny decision to make: the Mach 1000 or the Mach 460? Is the 1000 all that better sounding for roughly 1200 added onto the car? What about XM radio and that other new radio crap they're selling? Worth it?

It's always nice to get your system in the loan payment, but if you can swing it, it's better to get a custom install from a quality car audio place. I can't count how many times I spend the money and get the high end factory system, then 6 months later tearing half or all of it out to do a better system. <edited><editID>HotRods_n_Booze</editID><editDate>38008.5394328704</editDate></edited>

One more loop heh. I was calling around for prices, and this dealer tells me they have a 2003 Mach-1, leather, all done up, etc.4k miles on it because the kid was young couldn't afford the insurance. Red, body is perfect, says something to look at, even has Mach 1000 system. Question is now, 2004 GT or 2003 Mach-1? 23K for the Mach. Thoughts?

I'm going to get the Mach 1000, even though he was trying to move them off the lot by telling me the 1000's take up all of the trunk and etc, etc. (a.k.a.: he wants to move what he has, not order more of course). Hey guys,

Just got back from the dealer a bit ago. Here are the specs on the car:

2004 GT Coupe Premium w/40th Anniv

black clearcoat, medium parchment leather (guy told me charcoal first, wtf?) , real spoiler, speed control (never heard of this...), air condition, 6 cd mach 1000, 17" premium alloy (40th anniv again i guess), 5spd v8, p245/45ZR17 tires, 40th anniv package, interior upgrade, abs/traction

price: 28,100

Guy says he can work the numbers and break it down to about 500/mo finance. Does this sound right? They want $500 down non-refundable etc which I don't like, considering here's the line they gave me:

"This is the ONNNNNLY one...if this guy sells the car monday, you're screwed. If it gets here and you don't want it, 500 is non-refundable."

I don't like this. I haven't even seen the car yet and they're expecting me to either take it when it gets here, or eat $500. That's a lot. Also, 2001 v6 auto coupe, 46400 miles on it, runs great, they offered 6500 for it. They said it's not worth more. Their reasons? Below:

1. Check engine light on (easily fixed at any shop)

2. They hear exhaust from the front of the vehicle

3. rides rough

I'm thinking about selling the car privately for about $15,000. Would you say it's worth that much? Any other options I can try? I have 12K left on my finance on it, and I'm getting a new one for a lot of reasons, most personal and which I'd really rather not go into here (one of them being my father passed about 5 months ago, just something to make the days go by smoother if understandable). I know this is a lot of money to eat (about 5K+), but I love mustangs and I think the v8 would be a lot of fun to drive and learn stick on. Any info/feedback is more than welcome. I'm looking for a place to sell my car privately and then go over to Ford Motor Credit, give them the cash, give the bill of sale to the new guy and look for a new car.

Thanks a lot in advance guys, know it's a lot to read :-)

well the whole part about the 500 $ dollar non-refundable down payment seems odd to me, but if it's a ford dealership i would say that you can trust them, but as for them saying it's the only one, now that's horses**t, you can got to any dealership and get one of those, hell i was at ford today in savanah Ga and they had 7 of them out front and they looked good.

Anyways, the price sounds about right, but it could be talked down lower I think. if I remember right the 2003 GT's went for about 26-27,000$ fully loaded, so I think your doing right.

As for the V6 your better off being patient and selling it person to person not trading it in, the dealership is always going to try and f***you on s**t like that, they will tell stuff is wrong with it when it's not just so they can get it for cheap and then sell it for morre than it's worth. Try putting the car on ebay or autotrader, or something of that sort.

I hope that this has been of some help to you. take it easy and keep us informed.

Thanks a lot for the feedback. Yeah you're right about the "only one" crap. I mean, the only reason I'm considering this place even a little is because they're the lowest I've seen yet. Sigh. I could have this car tuesday. See the temptation? :/

It seems as if I have to press down quite a bit and come back up quite a bit. I'm just trying to think of a scenario where there's a lot of traffic and I have to keep shifting into and out of first. Is this just because the car wasn't on that it felt like it took quite a bit of leg power to push the clutch down? Sorry if this sounds dumb, I'm new to stick.

Thanks again folks,

granted of course they will still offer something less than that price, but at least you'll some facts that work for you
About the clutch, it's a heavy duty clutch to take more power. The clutch in my TA is way different than in my gf's car. Her's you can push through the floor, mine, she has a hard time pushing at all....

2001V6, the hard clutch will make your leg stronger, LOL.
I can see it now, 2001V6 will be in traffic and her leg gets too tiered so she just puts it in park and hells out the window, GO AROUND, I'M TAKING A REST!

If you haven't bought the car yet you must go to www.carbuyingtips.com (http://www.carbuyingtips.com)

It will tell you everything you need to know before buying that car. I'm also shoping for a GT and I can tell you for a fact they are offering you MSRP minus the rebate (which is 3k). They don't pay the rebate, the factory does. Never ever ever pay MSRP unless the car is so hot everyone wants one. And because of the 05 coming out the 04 is not that hot right now. I got a quote for a GT thats less than $100 above invoice and about 3k under what they quoted you (and mine was a convertable). Do you still owe on your V6? If you do they will take the difference of the 6500 and what you owe and tack it onto the new car note. It sounds like they are seriously screwing you. I am currently negotiating with 4 ford dealerships right now. 3 of them I am sending emails back and forth with. The fourth I am going to walk in with my best quote and see if they can beat it. I knew absolutely nothing about buying a car (or at least I thought I did) before I read that site. Also...before you buy the stick...I would learn on another car first. Any friends or relatives willing to teach you on thier car? You don't want to hurt that new baby by learning on it. The 3k rebate is good until the end of march I think (I could be wrong). Get the GT, but don't let the dealership rape you.

For a used vehicle I would shop around, hit alot of sites and try to get a consensus of what the vehicle is going for. If you want to take a risk and don't mind traveling to get the Stang e-bay is always a choice. Make sure you run the VIN number at a site like carfax. And of course get an extended warrenty (not from the dealer, they will screw you on the price). A coworker of mine got a good deal on a car through ebay. However it can take a while for that perfect car to come up at auction. I couldn't wait. Make sure you have a mechanic check it out before you buy it. Course you sound like you know your way around stangs so you may be able to do it yourself. If you buy used from a dealer never ever sign an "as is" clause. They should offer at least a 90 day warrenty. If it's "as is" they are probably hiding something. Don't put any money down until the deal is done. If buying from a person make sure they have the title. A lot of stolen cars get sold that way. I know a lot of this is comman sense but it's easy to overlook things in the heat of buying a car. If the deal doesn't feel right walk away. There will always be another Stang around the corner up for sale.

I've been doing some serious home work in preparation in buying. 99% of people buying new or used cars pay too much because they don't know better. I feel so much better walking into a dealership fully armed with the knowledge of what a good deal is and what is not. I can not say enough about www.carbuyingtips.com (http://www.carbuyingtips.com). I know I sound like a comercial but everything is on that site and it costs nothing.

Thanks a lot for the tips and advice. :-) Here's basically what it's broken down to:

I've gone through about 7 dealers now and tomorrow I'm going to the 8th to see what they have to offer. They seem rather cool so I'm willing to give it a shot. They'd have to order my 2004 40th anniversary black clearcoat, mach 1000, dark charcoal interior for me. It would take about 8-12 weeks from the factory. The thing I noticed though, is that the tape stripes only go down the hood and rear deck lid. Why not the roof too? I'm contemplating just getting the gt premium with interior upgrade and doing my own body style work. Any thoughts? Any advantage to the 40th package that's worth $900 extra? Just thinking out loud here. Also, if anyone has AIM or some such please feel free to PM me with your name if you feel like chatting, would love to.
