This is great.
Okay so MAC might be the choice for cold air intake? I'd like to know if ANY air intake is plug an play. I don't have to chage timing or anything else? (I'm an old V8 person) Also, when it is installed what happens to gas mileage (both intown and highway driving)? I really like the member post to a site with step-by-step pictures (great).

yeah id say MAC is the like the brand name of the cold air intake but there are other brand name cai's that are way cheaper and add the same horseys as a mac....none of my friends are gonna be like...is that a MAC cai or a cheap ebay one?...they will be just as impressed with the chrome and wont matter what brand it is....theyll think im an idiot if i spent 175$ for like 5 hp, max, rather than spending around $50 for even 3 hp....id say take the risk of getting a nice somewhat brand name(bomz racing or some other cai that has a brand name at least) from ebay and seeing if it fits rather than spending 3x that....thats just my opinion
i like taking risks

oh yeah,i dont think ive complimented booze on the step by step pic of a mac install...very nice very nice

Baddog, they make larger throttle bodies, but you have to port your intake, or in other words, cut your stock intake manifold to the new size throttle body.

Dont they make larger throttle bodies, by millimeter or something? And then wouldnt the next thing down still rescrict it? the manifold I guess...
The T/B end of the intake in mine is now 65mm, but it opened WAY up inside the intake manifold...so no.

the mac will fit the 3.9l....at least i think, what i would do is wherever you get ur mac ask them specifically if it will fit the later 04 with the 3.9l in it....the only 3.9l on this forum i know of is NewMexMustang and i think he has a K&N cai...
best bet to just ask usually online sites, especially our sponsors, have excellent customer service....ask autobadges, hed know 100% if it will fit

Well...now you know two. I was reading that the 3.9L replaced the 3.8L in 04 and only for one year and only in the American Mustang. Sooooo...I guess there won't be many performance parts.....

Shucks......I knew I should have gotten the GT.

Also..that's who I got the MAC from.......autobadges......"suppport our sponsors"
Now I wish for a pair of chrome valve covers and enough money to upgrade the exhaust to duals.
Went to the local Midas shop.....$650.....maybe after christmas...
And COOL....NewMexMustang and I are the only 3.9L...well we're neighbors anyway.

yeah if you got it from a sponsor it will fit....and im in the process of converting my exhaust to duals as well and I think i may only have to pay $60 for two force mufflers and about 120-150 for the pipe work at a muffler shop, and I have read some posts on other forums where this sounds awesome....especially for the low cost.....Ill let ya know though

I was thinking that if I were going to redo it I'd redo the whole thing. My headers from the block look like shortys. So starting there.
Pypes 409 Stainless Mini Catalytic Converters. This gives me about 30-50% more air flow from the beginning. Having Midas build an H-pipe exhaust and put Flowmaster 40s and stainless tips. Adding the MAC CAI...I should get about 25-35 rwhp and IF I drive nice...improve my gas mileage from 28 to about 30+ freeway. All-in-all about $750 wo/headers.

not bad, what year do u have because as long as you dont have a 98 then u could maybe be interested in getting some mac long tube headers,as long as it doesnt mess up ur pypes system...Im not too sure about the price....check out some of the sponsors sites, these long tubes or even shorty tubes from mac allow for even more air flow through the exhaust, but too much air flow can be a bad thing too, but im not too sure about this......maybe someone can help me out

Well I'm still not sure about exhaust. The OEMs look like shortys and I'd never drive open headers anyway. Looking more for sound, long haul performance and gas mileage. I found Cat4ward shorty at MustangDepot.com for $399 and finally found chrome valve covers at texasmustang.com for $309. But wifie says I have to wait until after holiday.....

Here ya go. Ask your cold air intake questions or add your opinions and knowledge about cold air intakes here, also known as CAI.

CLICK THIS PIC AND SEE A STEP BY STEP MAC COLD AIR INTAKE INSTALLATION

I have to tell you what a help your post was. The only difference I can see is the MAC CAI air cleaner. You're right is was a pain but mine tightened from inside the engine compartment instead of from inside the fender well.
I also wanted to review the product:
Ease of installation 1-5 (5 being hardest) 1
Product Quality: 1-5 (5 being high quality) 5 all my clamps fit and were the right size. The chrome is a nice under the hood touch.
Product performance:
Here's what I see. My 04 already got its OEM air flow from outside the engine compartment thru the fender well. So, cold air wasn't an issue for me. The MAC air cleaner is not in a housing so that has to increase ease of air flow. I don't notice a big improvement in stop and go, from red light to red light driving. I don't floor it between stops. I did notice that my cruise control speed works better (55-70) and where the real improvement is in passing and acceleration to freeway speeds from 55 to 90. It seems to accelorate better when you're going 55 or 70 without dropping overdrive.
Would I spend the money again knowing what I know now? Maybe. What manufacturers don't tell you is a 9.5 rwhp increase compaired to what? From what I had to what I have now. I don't think so. But my philosophy has been that an engine has to breath and exhaust easily or nothing else will work to its full potential. Knowing that my next two mods (duals and headers) are coming up, I wanted my engine to inhale as good as possible.
Done.

Spirit
