where does the sender for an autometer oil gauge go?/

You can put where the factory one is now, or get some plumbing and put it in with the factory sender so you have both.

I have not been underneath a new Mustang to look, but on other Ford V8s that I've seen, including mine, the sender is near the oil filter. Look for a small round part screwed in near there with a wire coming off of it. You should be able to simply unscrew the stock part and screw the new sender in its place with a bit of thread sealer on the threads. Keep in mind, though, that if you replace it with an after market sender it probably will not properly drive the stock oil gauge in your dash. You'd need to feed the sender output to an after-market gauge to read the real pressure. Or, as mentioned above, plumb it so that both senders are hooked up and both the stock and after market gauges run side by side.
