My '66 convertible has been burning increasingly more oil over the summer. A significant amount of smoke is now venting through the oil breather cap. Also, I can definitely hear a "clicking" which I understand is the result of not using leaded fuel.

So I am taking my mechanics advice and having him do a valve job, replacing the timing chain and O-rings while he's at it (if that's not already understood in the term "valve job"). The engine is a 2valve 289 with an after market highrise intake, and 4-bbl carb.

The reason I am posting here is because I am not very knowledgable about what my options are in this case and I was hoping to tap into the wealth of knowledge on this board. I have two questions: am I doing the right thing by having the valve job, etc, done, and 2) while I am doing this, is there anything else I should have done?

An overhaul can take many turns. If you have a complete overhaul, then they will replace the bottom end which mainly consists of the rings and bearings with a boring job of the cylinders of about 0.30 over factory specs, and turning the crank. The top end will receive a valve job with new gaskets added. If you want more than a basic overhaul, then get back with us for more information.
