I was wondering what GPS system would be best to replace my factory radio in my 2005 mustang. Has anyone here switched one out? How hard is it to install if I buy one myself?

Do plenty of research as several of my buddies opted for the newer lines of GPS/DVD Player/In dash screens and have been disapointed in the fact that the video safety switch that used to be attatched to the brakes is now integrated into the GPS system. If the GPS detects movement in your car, no video can be displayed in the front of the vehicle. I know I know..."Why would I want to watch video while driving?" It is still upsetting that, despite safety issues, you can't have video play in the front seats, especially after a 2000 dollar investment.
My suggestion has always been purchase seperate components, such as an alpine in dash DVD with an external GPS. This way, the video safety controls can be.......well....negated. Depending on what state you live in, this might be illegal.
I'm not real concerned with watching TV in my car, I just want to get something that fits right in the spot where the radio is. It would be nice to have a DVD player up front, but I'm more concerned with something that looks good in that big hole.
Eclipse makes a couple of double din models that are all in one. DVD, Navi, and even built in hard drive. They are the best in my opinion. Kenwood makes a great double din DVD player/screen and you can buy an optional navi system that hooks in to it. Pioneer also has a new double din but, I am not really familar with its features. Their single din is suppose to be really good. And Alpine makes single din screens that you can buy the optional navi system as well. You can check out www.eclipse-web.com to see what they have to offer. Great units and to me, the best picture quality.

Post a pic? you might be able to pick up a system out of an 05 lincoln navigator or something that will fit perfectly flush and use the same exact wiring harness. I'm looking to pick up an earlier Navigator system for my 02.

My boss back when I worked at his shop had the AVN6600 (now the 6610) in his Silverado, he always took it on trips to go to car shows, conventions and so forth and everytime he came back said it once again saved him from getting totally lost. If you ever took a wrong turn, it knew you turned off somewhere and routes you back to the fastest way to get back on track.
DVD, CD, MP3, iPod, Nav, rear view camera, HD Radio, Sirius, AM/FM. The thing does it all. And of course dont forget the ESN, which you wont find in any other car audio company. Which is Eclipse Security Network, you can click the link and read more on that if you dont know about it. 8 and a half million points of interest. This year it even goes into more detail showing the perimeter of many buildings, something I dont remember being on the 6600.
You can wire it to a switch so you can play it while driving, whether it be adjusting the nav, or watching a movie. Unlike some of the new Pioneer's that have the gyro sensor in them where you pretty much can't bypass that feature.

yup the Eclipse units are very nice. the pioneers are nice too. if you want full-on OEM look, you can buy the Ford navi unit that is now optional on the 2007s. then you can add other aftermarket stuff to it, by using those interfaces from Alpine, JL Audio, or RF.
