Has anyone heard or seen anything about a new BOSS Mustang? This morning at work I passes a new, with dealer tags, 2006 mustang. It was green, darker than legand lime, and had a flat black cowl hood and spoiler. It also had a reverse C stripe with "BOSS 289" on the fenders. BOSS 289 was also on the trunk lid to the right of the silver cap. Was this real or just a custom job. It looked pretty BA.

Not real... yet.

Odds are good they will put the 5.4 sans blower in a stang and call it the Boss. Probably around 400 hp (particularly if they bump the Shelby up to 500hp + to compete
with chevy, which i hope they do).

2008 Mach 1 (shaker and dohc intact, with about 350hp) may also be in the offing.

For variety, look for the V6 to sprout a turbo if gas prices get really high... 2nd generation "Turbo GT".

What does 289 mean? the engine is a 281.

Maybe they thought it was an older stang? They had 289's.

The "Boss 289" was probably referring to rwhp, if it was real at all. A few mods under the hood of the new 3v and you can get it to 289 at the real wheels pretty easy. You can also bore and stroke a 281 to make it 289, though why you'd want to (just go to 302 and THEN you'd have bragging rights) I can't imagine. Just a question - did the car have dual exhaust? If not, it was a six with a lot of cosmetic alterations - just a "transvestite stang" tarted up to look tough. There's a lot of this going on with dealers frustrated at their limited access to GT Mustangs and the slow sales of lots of the new Ford car lines...

289 was a popular engine size for ford back in the day, but im pretty sure the boss's of that age came with either a 302(Boss 302) or a 429 (Boss 429). The numbers had nothing to do with power, just the zise of the engine.

Never heard of a new boss. I know there will be a new Bullitt edition. this is strait outa motortrrend.

2008 Ford Bullitt Mustang

Ford won't launch the new Bullitt Mustang until the car gets a facelift, most likely scheduled for the 2008 model year. That's just in time for the movie's 40th anniversary. The facelift will be minor, but one concession to the movie car is that the Bullitt edition won't have the V-8's foglamps. Yes, the Bullitt will be a GT model and, like the last-generation Bullitt, probably will have some induction and exhaust changes for a few more ponies beyond the GT's 300 horsepower.

As far as identifying a V6 and GT by the exhaust, be careful! Remember you can get the V6 appearance package that has ALL the looks of a GT including dual exhaust.

Since none of us seems to know why there are "Boss 289" cars running around (saw one briefly on I75 the other day), we can only speculate. Ergo...

"289" stands for:

289ci stroker mod motor --

Horsepower at the flywheel for a V6 with some bolt-ons --

Horsepower at the rear wheels for a V8 with some bolt-ons --

Torque at the rear wheels for a V6 with some bolt-ons --

Torque at the rear wheels for a stock 281 3v --

Cost of the decals --

Only engine-related decal that would fit under the old Boss stripes some dealer has found under a pile of T-shirts from the 70's --

Just because.

They had a V6 boss package at a dealer down here. I thought WOW, that's quick... Then I noticed the price! It was around 21-22k... and that set off the alarm that it wasn't quite the boss I thought it was...

Slick97gt You are exactly correct! The original Boss cars were named for the cubic inches. And if Ford markets a new "BOSS" they had better up the ante under the hood. This is what my real BOSS looks like WWW.1969boss429.com enjoy!

I saw a white 2004 V6 auto with no spoiler and no hoodscoop. It didn't even have the pony package rims and it had a stripe over the hood and it said BOSS on the side. I saw this jackoff drive it at Orange Park Mall, and it left me speechless. I can't believe some of the crap people do.

Well if someone were making a '40th anniversary' Shelby it should have been out in 2005 as the Shelby Mustang began in 1965...

The Boss coming out isn't being built by Ford. Ford sold the rights to Shinoda Performance Vehicles (SPV) They have reached an agreement giving Karen D. Shinoda ownership of the BOSS Shinoda trademark name and Shinoda is building them.

You can read it here... http://www.stangsunleashed.com/index.php?categoryid=19&p2_articleid=58
