If your cruising on the highway, is there any reason you can't cut power to 4 spark plugs and just run on 4 cylinders of gas conserving purposes? I'm not thinking about doing it, but I thought it might be feasable and a good idea.. Are there kits out there to do something like that? Well it makes sense.It sounds about like what the northstar caddy motors do when they sense that you are overheating.They cut power to 4 of the cylinders and reduce your top speed to 50 miles an hour.</P>
I suppose if you were able to alternately fire those cylinders to keep them froim loading up then yes it would work.But i still dont think the outcome would be worth all the effort.</P>
back in the day GM did the same exact thing with the caddy 864 motor. like it says it would run on 8 at first then 6 then 4 cylinders. but it flopped. now GM is thinking of doing this again with the LS1 family for its trucks

with todays computer it will happen again think on the gas savings a 300hp engine knocking down 35mpg...
while you can it would not be cheaply possible as the engine fire different cyl. deferent times so all 8 get fire in a seq. like a firing order....
other than loading up, and without a sequential non-firing order, wouldnt the non-firing cylinders act as an engine brake?

remember, they arent firing so all they are doing is increasing the rotating mass. it would actually have the opposite effect. with the extra rotating mass it would take longer to slow down the crank so engine brake would be reduced. good idea in theory, but what would happen if you need to pass someone and the power isnt there?? and you would also have to control the fuel injection into every cylinder so that you would not be putting the fuel into the cylinder if there will be no spark, or it would use the gas anyways. im sure with all the computer sh*t these days they could do it pretty easily, but the computer would have to know when you need all 8 cylinders again. </P>
