I think you just gotta swap it out.  ANd it will work fine.  I'm almost 100% positive on that.

I think you need the correct speedo gear as well.you can also have the 85mph speedo recalibrated to whatever you want.

Gearing has absolutely nothing to do with the speedometer,  the gear in the tranny corresponds to the gearing and tire sizing,  All speedometers are calibrated exactly the same,  You could take a speedo out of a 84 escort and it would be accurate.  But you can't swap the whole cluster from  V8, but if you take the 6 or so outer screws out and change just the speedo head will work.  Reasons why the V8 cluster will not work 1.  v8 has a variable oil sender,  4cyl has fake oil indicator, meaning any oil pressure reads half, 2. Also the tach will be exactly 1/2 off.     Possible donors are 90-93 gt and V8 lx's,  87-89 cluster won't come close to fitting so don't bother.

how would the tach be off?  my logic says it would just show more rpms and the yellow and redlines would be off, but i dont see how the needle would be showing the wrong rpm

A tach is specific for a 4,6,and 8 cyl.  If you put a 4cyl tach in a v8 it reads double the rpm,  Ihave done plenty of 4cyl->8cyl swaps and they read 6,000 by actual 3000, it neat when you can bury the tach needle during normal driving.  You see a tach gets it signal from the coil, which fires every cylinder,  with a 4cyl it fires 4 times in one revolution, and a 8 cyl fires 8 times in one revoultion,  the early mustangs from 79-86 actually had a turn dial switch on the back of the tach to adjust 4,6,or 8.  new ones past 87 don't tho.  But if you use a timing light with a tach they are always right because you clip it on #1 cyl so no matter how many cylinders in one revolution #1 only fires ounce.   hope this explains everything.  But i got a better idea get a wrecked donor v8 car transfer the dash and the V8 all will be good then

All after market tach's aka moster tach either have 2 loops of wires hanging out instructions tell you by default it is set for 8cyl, cut 1 of them for 6 cyl, and both for 4cyl.  My monster Tach is set electronically, To cahnge it to to either 4,6,8, or 10 I have to hold a button on it while turning the key on and then hit the button til the tach reads the number of cyl I have,  just do a search on the internet for instructions,  I  had a cheaper tach from autozone it had a switch on the front for 4, 6, or 8

Trust me all, You need the speedo head only, After you take the cover off the cluster it seperates into 4 sections, volt&temp, tach, speedo, fuel&oil  just change the speedo section,  I have done this myself, and I am a ASE certifed mechanic, been working on fords for 18years, and I have owed over 25  79 and newer mustangs, i have made just about every combination and know what works,  also about the speedo, it will be accurate, if it is off, it was off before or you got a bad speedo, because if you put wrong size tires or differnt gears you are not off by 3to5 miles you would be off by a % therfore faster you go the more you are off.   But a speedo is a speedo.

im already intercooled

how do i know what injectors i have?  i think theyre black...

fyi turns out i probly have a stock head and intake so thats something i can swap for some decent power also...and cam...and i need a header...know where i can get one?  im not sure how big the turbine wheel is (i think they can be 48mm or 60mm right?) and i think that effects what size flange on the header ill need so i gotta find that out also.
