I have the 1000, which is just the 500 with the subs. It sounds OK, nothing spectacular but good enough for me. When I have the subs turned off the bass reponse basically disappears, but maybe its becuase I'm used to it with the subs on.
If you're an audiophile you will not be happy with it IMO. If you're like me and wanted a decent system and didn't want to mess around with installing a new system and cutting up or taking apart your new baby, or the rattles that will be eminant of a high power subwoofer setup, then it will be just right for you. I also love the 6 disc in dash MP3 player, you can save 1200 or so songs on them depending on the quality level you choose. I have changed out my CDs only when I burned a new set.
The 500/1000 watts refers to peak power, it's probably close to half of that for RMS power. It does go pretty loud but realize you're only dealing with maybe 40 watts per speaker. I know that the subs have 65w amps, x 4 (the 2 subs are dual voice coil) = 230w RMS.

I really like it, but it's no <insert high end head unit here>.
Like the above posts, I REALLY like having a decent system from the factory that can play MP3's AND have an AUX input - I have XM and an iPod that will be going in.
It's nothing compared to a good aftermarket stereo. The sound is great but at low volume lacks bass. Mine refuses to play audio CDs that I made on my computer. It takes longer to change between CDs than my Alpine CD changer but that one was one of the fastest! Any word on if buyers can delete the stereo?

Orion,
Have you tried different CD-R media? (from a different company?). Also (and you probably already know this) CD-RW media is far less compatible then CD-R media.
I burn Audio & MP3 disc's all the time, and that's what I use in my Mustang as well.
I used to install aftermarket units in my cars when I was alot younger. Nothing like what you hear in todays world with all the base but they were fine units back in the day. I opted for the Shaker 500 and love it! Its by far the best sterio I have ever had in any car that I have ever owned. Plenty loud (and I am somewhat hard of hearing) and the sound is very clear. So if your looking for good sound and you dont have to have 8 million watts of power so everyone one your block hears you coming a mile away, you wont be dissapointed with the Shaker 500 at all.
I have the 1000 and think it's a grand system. (no pun intended) As was stated, the sound is really clear, even at high levels. And with the 1000, I too had to turn the bass down to less than half. Any more than that is too much and too muddy for me(inside the car). If you're going to be outside the car (as in just hanging with the fellas and want to hear some tunes), you should be able to turn the bass up with no problems.
