take out pieces. put on cardboard (no fibers like a sheet) and use ALCOHOL to wipe pieces down and remove oils/waxes. now you can just paint 4-5 light coats of paint for a base and then 3-4 coats of clear for a shine

*important* give ample flash periods and let dry 1 hour before trying to reinstall anything, then leave windows down so car doesnt fume up

you should sand before spraying. search on other stang sites, you will find a how - to somewhere, I've seen them before.

i didnt sand my trim pieces and paint hasnt chipped off or anything in over 6 months. if you sand you will lose the texture of the piece painting. if you want a smooth high gloss finish, sand; if you want a factory colored gloss finish, dont sand

my only advice would be if it is at all possible, hang the pieces and spray them so you can hold the can horizontal the way it's meant to be used. Sometimes it can be a pain to get an even coat when you're painting on the floor.
You only really need to sand if there is already paint on there. Any mistakes can be cleaned when it dries with Goof-Off, but use it very lightly, as it'll take the paint back off, but also the plastic. Good luck.
